People smoke anywhere and everywhere here, unless there's a sign with the universal NO symbol over a cigarette! I've seen people smoking in the cereal aisle of a grocery store, in a bakery, in a public toilet... just everywhere. When my mom was here visiting, we were downtown at local stores, and she stopped to smoke on a bench and commented about how good it was to get a chance to smoke... and I just dropped my jaw and asked her if she hadn't noticed all the others smoking anywhere and everywhere, and she hadn't! It's not something she would ever think to see anymore!!
Guest guest
I visited Italy and Germany when I was pg with my son. In Venice, we're in an elevator and some guy gets in and lights a cigarette. I was floored. Here we are a two year old and a pregnant woman in an ELEVATOR and he's smoking. The health risks are not part of the national culture and you're right, in Europe, people smoke anywhere and everywhere. , how much longer will you be there? I think it must be beautiful there. Am I right? Can you see the ocean and can you and the kids swim in it? --- Howell wrote: > > > > i guess i am taking these no-smoking laws in > > California for granted! i too was shocked when i > saw > > the post about the non-smoking section. i love > that i > > You would have serious culture shock then if you > ever visited the > Azores! When we first got to out hotel(excalibur) I saw a man walking throught the lobby smoking and said " dad! john! look hes smoking! hes gonna get in trouble! " and they laughed at me and john said " alli...where are we? " " nevada. " " right---not california--people are allowed to smoke here! " I felt reall silly! but havign lived in Ca my whole life I never realized it was different any where else--smoking is a definate no-non in public places out here
