Guest guest
My bad leg is strong enough that I can lift it over the edge to get in, if you aren't strong enough, You can sit on the edge put your good leg in and and, lift the other leg over. Guest guest
There was no way I was going to give up taking a bath. I hate showers. You just have to be careful getting in and getting out, I always hang on to something when I get out so I don't fall. Connie lady_luvs_fishing@... writes: Hi The therapist at the hospital told me prior to surgery that I would never be able to take a bath ever again, I was SOOO depressed over that. Well I proved her wrong, took a bath by one month and taking them daily since. At first I would enter the bathtub backwards and get down on the good knee and turn. Now and for some time now I enter the normal way but am just careful. Even the doctor says it was ok to bathe. Carole

Guest guest
You have to do what is best for you. I didn't take a bath til about 7 weeks after surgery. Then I couldn't wait any longer. I'd merely slide into place kinda balanced on good leg, using the arms 2 drop myself in the tub. I always kept my bad leg straightened..... most of the time with my toe on the facet just 2 remind me DIFFERENT ENTRY! I haven't been able 2 get in since trouble with my shoulder...... Guest guest
I don't have any problems with it. Someone else was concerned about it. Connie lady_luvs_fishing@... writes: Connie My suggestion to you is to ask your physiotherapist. Mine was very helpful, she said you shouldn't take baths, but if you do this is the way to do it... (mine was trhp_ It might not work for everyone, but I was and am strong enough to do it without problems. Once you are sitting in the tub, don't try to reach the taps, fill the water first. I now can bend to turn on taps etc but am still careful doing it. Hope this helps Carole

I would start mine and leave run while I entered, but could just use my foot 2 do a "laying step on it" which pushes mine down & turns it off. As a good hot bubble bath has 2 be filled 2 the rim in my book! I want the water at the top and the bubbles breaching my soap holder. LOL <giggling> course considering I've not been able 2 take one in awhile.... I could live with pre~filled and NO BUBBLES! LOL
Guest guest
Carole, I'm trying to visualise what your PT suggested. I think I understand about getting on your knees. How do you get from there to the sitting position? And how do you get out after the bath? Colin > > > > My bad leg is strong enough that I can lift it over the edge to get > in, if > > you aren't strong enough, You can sit on the edge put your good leg > in and > > and, lift the other leg over. Guest guest
Not all patients have a 90 degree rule. I didn't. I found it most stable to bend at the knee and then straighten that leg so the foot came down in the tub. Then I'd repeat with the other leg to be standing in the tub. I'd be using the crutch or cane during this entire process. It worked well. It let me assure that I was solid before moving from one stage to the next and have the crutch/cane to catch myself if necessary. I would check this manuver out with a PT though. It worked for me but we are all different. Earlier in recovery, I used a shower transfer bench. That' is definitely a more stable and safer way. I had the shower head on a hose which made it easier to use while sitting. > > > > My bad leg is strong enough that I can lift it over the edge to get > in, if > > you aren't strong enough, You can sit on the edge put your good leg > in and > > and, lift the other leg over. Guest guest
Hi Colin You are basically on your stomach once you are down in the tub then turn. To get out..... Same way, basically you turn onto your stomach facing the back wall. One hand on side of tub and one on the handrail... It did take strength a month after surgery but then got easier. Now I get in normal way. I had surgery mid January. hope this helps Have a great daycolin120881 <mchava@...> wrote: Carole,I'm trying to visualise what your PT suggested. Guest guest
Hi Carole I think I get it. When you say " back wall " do you mean the faucet end or the other end? Anyway, thank you. I think this will be a big help. I really value this group. People provide so much experience and help and are really welcoming to those of us with only limited resources. Have a great week-end. Guest guest
Carole, Thank you for all the help. I have two final stupid questions. When, using this method, when you transfer from kneeling to sitting, do you roll onto your back and then situp or do you go from the kneeling position to the sitting by sitting back on your heels, lift yourself up with the bar and push your legs forward? Do you end up sitting with your back to the faucets? I am feeling very foolish asking all these questions but, nine weeks after surgery, I am really looking forward toa proper bath. Again many thanks. Guest guest
Hi again Colin Let me try to make it clearer..... First you get into the tub facing the back wall (not the taps) You know how they teach you to bend to pick something up?? Stretch operated leg, (since I havn't done it for some time now, I go in normally, I just got on the floor to do it to remind myself exactly how it was done, way the physiotherapist did it for me) Ok well you stretch the operated leg while getting down on your knee on your good leg. This way you aren't bending the operated leg at all...... You are holding your body up with your hands/arms, then you turn on the side that you aren't operated on into a sitting position thus u are now facing the taps. The hand rail or bathtub edges is only to help make it easier getting down. Reverse these steps to get out of the tub. I have to admit, 4 weeks post operation, this took alot of energy so I wasn't doing it daily but as I got stronger it got easier and easier and now I go in the normal way but am very careful. What I am saying is if you are older and havn't got a strong upper body, stick to the showers for awhile. Hope this helps.. colin120881 <mchava@...> wrote: Carole,Thank you for all the help.
