Milhorat, MD, has assumed his duties as chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at both Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.In addition, he becomes the first director of the new Chiari Center being established on the Manhasset campus. Named for Professor Hans Chiari, who first described cerebellar anomalies at the base of the skull, the Chiari Center will be the nation’s first multidisciplinary diagnostic/surgical/management facility for patients suffering from Chiari’s syndrome and syringomyelia.Dr. Milhorat comes to the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System from the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn, where he was professor and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. He received his BA and MD degrees from Cornell University.“With the collaboration of my outstanding new colleagues at the North Shore-LIJ Health System, and with the many resources at our disposal, I look forward to building a neurosurgical program of such stature that it will attract patients not only from the region, but nationally and even worldwide, " Dr. Milhorat said.“The establishment of the Chiari Center will permit patients with surgically treatable conditions to be distinguished from those with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and other ambiguous neurological disorders,†Dr. Milhorat continued. “Their diagnosis and treatment will be of the highest order, and the connection with the Boas-Marks Biomedical Research Science Center will permit us to follow intriguing new scientific leads.â€The North Shore-LIJ Health System includes 18 hospitals, four long-term-care facilities, three trauma centers, nine home health agencies, and numerous outpatient centers throughout Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Richmond counties.
