Guest guest
Dear Angie- You should check your sugar first thing in the morning and before lunch and dinner and at bedtime. Pete also had high blood sugars from the pred at times was up to 360. He has been very firtunate and has been able to control it with diet. He doesn't eat or drink anything that has :blantant sugar " ie- soda, cake, candy and all that good stuff. and you are right about the carbohydrates and starches keep them down too. If you crave sugar Pete's doc says have a piece of fruit. You must consider that glucophage may not be the " right " pill for you. Also you need to have a blood test done that will tell you how your blood sugar has run over a long period of time and YES I am having a blank and can't remember the name of it....somebody help!! Your doc will kjnow though it is done very commonly on diabetics..hope this was some help. Keep us posted Love ya Angie..Janet
Guest guest
Hi everyone! I am a new member to the group. I was dx with RP in March of this year. My Dr. figures that I have had it for about 5 years. I have trouble with the inflamed ears, nose, and have continuos bilateral iridocyclitis of the eyes. This is causing graduall sight loss. I also have problems with my trachea and have to use a CPAP machine. Also have severe arthritis, neuropathy, diabetes and heart disease. I am currently on prednisone and methotrexate for the RP and several other meds for the various other things. Angie - I saw your questions about diabetes and hope you don't mind if I stick in my 2 cents worth. The best times to check your sugar is before each meal and before bedtime. You should not eat anymore than 45 - 60 grams of carbs and/or sugar at each meal and you should always eat three meals a day and a snack before bed. My sugar always runs high (160 - 400) My Dr. says its because with the RP and diabetes your body is under a lot of stress which makes the sugar run higher. You just have to compensate for it. I take two shots of insulin a day , 30 units each, if my sugar is high I add 10 units until it comes down. I hope this info helps. If you have any more questions please feel free. I 've become pretty experienced with this sorta thing , unfortunately LOL. I'm glad to be with the group . You all seem to be a great bunch of people. I hope to get to know all of you soon. Guest guest
Angie, This is the diabetic diet I got from the dietician. 15mg. of carbohydrates equals 1 carb. unit Breakfast: 3 carbohydrate units 1 fat Lunch: 3 carbohydrate units 2 oz. Protein 1 fat Dinner: 4 carbohydrate units 4 oz. protein 2 fats Snack: 2 carbohydrate units I have lost 30 pounds so far on this diet. I check my blood sugar right before breakfast and again in the evening right before my snack. Check your labels to determine amount of carbs. I have seen books at the drug store that list carb. values for foods. If you cannot find one let me know and I'll see if I can get you one. Guest guest
Welcome to the RP. list! You have joined a great group. My name is Sandy, I was dx. in May of 99. The doctors estimate I've probably had RP. for over 10 years. I am looking forward to getting to know you better. Hugs, Sandy Re: diabetes > Hi everyone! I am a new member to the group. Guest guest
Angie, The best time to check your sugar is in the morning, before you have anything to eat or drink. Your levels will go up and down, depending on what you have eaten and a list of other things. Stress, being tired, exercise. Some foods, like orange juice will rise the level in a minute. If you vary your drugs, your sugar will go up if you increase the Pred. Talk to your Doctor about having another sugar pill that you can take in the case of a sudden increase in levels. We should have been Chemists, because this is a constant battle of mixing drugs. Log your readings every morning, before dinner, and just before bed time. You will soon see a pattern. After a while, you will be able to feel it. Kind of like when you can feel a flare coming on. Again, Check every morning, before you eat. It's great to see you posting again. I have missed you, and I pray you are getting stronger every day. Love Ya, Jim
