Guest guest
Hi I would like to ask a few questions to those who know about Salycilates. I feel like I've made a shocking but exciting discovery about my son this week. Zachary has been doing fabulously on SCD to the point where I feel he has very few issues remaining. I have suspected peaches could be a problem for him in the past but my focus has been on gluten and the rules of SCD, so I thought if it was a problem, it must be a minor one and I just haven't wanted to pull anything else out of his diet. Last week, my husband made a huge batch of peachsauce. Zachary hasn't had peaches in months. This whole last week I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with my son. He went from being conversational with me and totally with it to being almost unintelligible. I couldn't understand most of what the kid's been trying to tell me. He's actually been starting to read since being on SCD and he could no longer read ANY of the words he'd been reading very well without great struggle. It's like he was on drugs! I feel like this could be what we've been missing so that Zachary can function the way we know he can all the time! I feel so ignorant to have overlooked this. I've heard people talking about salicylates and fenols but I haven't really thought it could be affecting Zachary for some stupid reason. I keep thinking how Zachary used to eat baby food peaches every day before we began SCD. Now, maybe I know why. Now, if anybody can help me with this, I would really be grateful. 1. Where can I read more about salicylates and fenols and get a complete list? 2. Zachary has applesauce every day without a problem. Could he be sensitive to some salicylates but not others? 3. If salycilates are a problem, is he likely to have a fenol problem also? 4. It seems like I've heard people say that they become tolerant of salycilates and fenols after some time on SCD. Is that true? We've been on SCD for a while, but maybe not long enough. 5. Does this sound like a salicylate reaction? I always thought it would be more of a hyper reaction for some reason but he's just totally been in a fog. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
This is the information I refered to multiple times a day when I made that same discovery! Now I know what foods my son can eat, everything else is a " no " for now. http://users.bigpond.net.au/allergydietitian/fi/sal.html http://users.bigpond.net.au/allergydietitian/fi/salicylates-list.html As far as applesauce, you will find on the above link that some apples are low in salicylates. We only use those, even so, I limit applesauce to a small serving because it really is quite consentrated. I believe phenols are a chemical in all foods, salicylates is one kind. But I could be totally and utterly wrong I understand some kids can tollerate some foods that are high in salicylates even though much needs to be avoided. I was discussing that with one of the moms here who can serve honey and avocadoes. It will be trial and error for you, as with us all. Unfortunately, my son doesn't get rid of the salicylates in his body for 4-6 days and so I don't dare try anything new for a long time! Poor kid had all of three blackberries on a walk with a friend. The next day he was crying and tantruming like pre SCD. My son gets very confused, frustrated and irritable so we avoid all salicylates like the plague. Some parents have found success with an enzime formulated specificly for breaking down salicylates, called " No-Fenol " by Houston Nutraceuticals, Inc. As far as reaction, I suppose it would not be out of the question to not see hyperactivity. Count your blessings! Remember, this no salicylates diet is also called the Feingold Diet and is used to treat many ADD and ADHD kids without needing medical intervention. I know it really restricts your son's diet more, but isn't it great to finally get a consistant healthy, happy kid?!! Congratulations and Kudos to you for being so observant! Definately! There's no rhyme or reason with it. When Sam is going through die-off he's extra sensitive. Watermelon is lower than cantaloupe, but he cannot tolerate watermelon and does find with cantaloupe! It's terrribly frustrating! > 3. If salycilates are a problem, is he likely to have a fenol > problem also? I'm not that familiar with this. Sam seems affected by salicylates. He does ok with broccoli, mushrooms, bananas....which have other phenolic chemicals. > 4. It seems like I've heard people say that they become tolerant of > salycilates and fenols after some time on SCD. Is that true? We've > been on SCD for a while, but maybe not long enough. We've only be doing SCD for 5 months. At 4 months he was tolerating occasional apples, berries and orange juice. Now he reacts to them. I can't figure it out. I'm attributing it another round of die-off and seasonal allergies! I started testing other salicylates (peaches and grapes) but had two weeks of regressive behavior and have given up for awhile. > 5. Does this sound like a salicylate reaction? I always thought it > would be more of a hyper reaction for some reason but he's just > totally been in a fog. > Sam reacts differently to different fruits. Watermelon makes him weepy. Peaches made him aggressive. Apples and cucumber make him hyper and impulsive. Grapes made him very loud and demanding and inflexible. Can you picture this kid preFeingold and SCD?!?!? These items were mainstays in his diet and he ate most of these daily!!!! What a change. Foggy is definately a possibility! He could also be suffering from allergies at the same time that may have made his tolerance for peaches lower. Good luck!!! Guest guest
Helen and Chrystee - Thanks for the answers and the links to help me with this. I'm going to print out this stuff and study it and see if I can figure out everything Zachary is reacting to. By the way, have either of you tried No-Fenol? Thanks again! Guest guest
Haven't tried No-Fenol, although I have a bottle in my kitchen. My son reacts so strongly to the foods that I don't have the courage to try it just in case it doesn't work for him! Last Thursday he had all of three blackberries on a walk with a friend and I think today it will finally be almost out of his system. This weekend was a real trial! One day..... Guest guest
I know exactly what you are talking about! This has been my life for years and sometimes I have two reacting at once. We tried Kirkman's Multi complete enzyme and I stopped it after a few days. Not sure whether it was helping or not (probably just agitating them), just seems too nerve racking with the other things going on with this diet. They did calm down then. We've actually seen the salicylate sensitivities diminish some, so I am hoping that will keep you going. Have you been able to get the goat's milk yogurt in? That seems to have been a big issue here. Also, giving the kids time to rest. I think stress makes recovery really hard. I wish I could give you magic dust to make the reactions go away. The best I can do is say don't give up hope OK? Are you taking the Freeda multivitamin, because that may have a low level of salicylates in the Bioflavaniods. This is so frustrating because the reason they are so sensitive is partially because they need certain nutrients. The Stress B Complex is ok for older kids (1/2 pill). I am using liquid minerals, but am considering other options now that the sensitivies are diminishing. Best wishes, and rest when you can. Kathy H.
