Guest guest
Dear Cheryl, I haven't been checking this group as much as a month ago when my 7 year old son had the decompression/laminectomy/duraplasty surgery for his acm/syrinx. But, while catching up today I noticed your mail and wanted to try to reassure you about the surgery. Having not had it myself I can't say it is easy and painless. For two days after the surgery my son threw up and slept. He was on a variety of painkillers for that time. He left the hospital 3 days after surgery, didn't take any more painkillers, and is feeling fine now-a little more than a month since surgery. At the hospital, there were 2 other people with the acm surgery-a kid and an adult, both were doing just fine. Another adult I talked to who had had the surgery said the big thing is that you can't turn your head for the first few weeks, so you can't really drive a car. She has a son who also had the surgery and it went well for him too. Of course, adults typically recover much more slowly than kids and who knows if the surgery will alleviate all your symptoms. But, from my relatively limited experience, this is a relatively low-risk surgery. Of course there are always worries about the anaesthesia-that was my biggest fear with my son-but, my uninformed understanding is that if you don't have a family history of complications with anaesthesia and/or if you have had it before you're really low - risk for those kinds of complications. The surgery itself was routine for our neurosurgeon-he was doing 2 or 3 a week. He felt it was an over-prescribed surgery-that a lot of people were having it uneccessarily-which also speaks well of it-if it were extremely high risk the surgery wouldn't be done so readily. So, just make sure you have a really good surgeon who does this surgery frequently. Ask the surgeon to give you some names of ex-patients. It was enormous help to me to be put in contact with families who had the same neurosurgeon and had gone through the whole ordeal. Good luck with everything. -Sue chiari wrote: > Help section: http://www.yahoogroups.com/help/ > > NOTE: NCC refers to posts with No Chiari Content > > To Unsubscribe Yourself: > chiari-unsubscribeYahoogroups > > WACMA Home: www.pressenter.com/~wacma > > WACMA List: www.eGroups.com/group/chiari > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > There are 25 messages in this issue. > > Topics in this digest: > > 1.
