Guest guest
Thanks Anne for the info! Horsley Re: pain/Janelle We were told by our Dr that a nacodic for pain would not be prescribed because they tend to be inaffective in mito patients. Anyone else heard that one? Horsley Not true but it does seem that I have heard MANY people say that their child/themselves required more than the typical patient. They work fine for my kids if they get the right amount and that is the key - having docs who understand that the amount is not what is to be focused on as much as the pain control. If a kid requires say 3x what everyone else requires for the same level of sedation or pain control - this simply means he is more tolerant . Not more dependent -just more tolerant. Our docs have had to explain this over and over to the nurses at the hospital because Sam gets about 10 or more times the "typical" dose. But he is fine - his oxygen sats are exactly what they would be in a kid on the normal dose, he still wakes up when it wears off, still has his gag reflex, etc. he just is more tolerant and it seems this is the case for many kids with mito. of course it is normal for anyone chronically using pain meds to become more tolerant but in Sam and Zach - they started out needing far more than they thought right from the get go.
