Guest guest
I know this is probably not the answer you are looking for.... There is a study that was release recently that states that cough syrup isn't effective at treating or depressing a cough. The study found that the cough syrups tested (both the medicines you are talking about) didn't work any better than the placebo!!! This is huge, in my opinion. It might not be worth your time and effort (or cost to compound) to find one that is SCD legal if it really doesn't work. That being said, the closest thing I have found to legal is Robitusin brand Sugar-Free cough syrup. It *is not legal.* And it didn't last long for us so was not worth the effort of trying to get Sam to take it and risking the reaction to the artificial flavors. You might be better off trying to get some lemon/honey tea or warm water into your child and getting some plain saline nose drops. The study also found that a cough due to a common cold or allergy will go away by itself in a couple of days! here's a link to an article about the study http://www.turnto10.com/health/3497593/detail.html Good luck! Guest guest
This info is from Patti (from a previous post). Ginger and honey make a wonderful cough " syrup " ..... you can use regular powdered ginger like you use for baking. Add about 1/4 teaspoon to 2 Tablespoons of honey..... mix well and then give one teaspoon or less at a time. He loves it. Garlic seems to be more effective the less you cook it. Elderberry also works wonderfully - it can get rid of a cold or cough before it gets a chance to get really started. Pre-SCD we used an elderberry syrup called Sambucol. On SCD the nutritionist who is helping us recommends to harvest very ripe elderberries, stew them gently with a little honey, sieve and freeze in small quantities. Then produce from freezer as and when needed. W SCD 14 months
