Guest guest
Hello, my name is Deborah, I'm from Auckland, New Zealand, and you are in luck! :-) Mr Furneaux was my neurosurgeon and he was brilliant (I had the usual operation at Auckland Hospital in May 1998 - foramen magnum decompression). Actually, my timing is great - I had been feeling so well I had unsubscribed from this list a good two years ago and just resubbed to see if I could catch up with people I used to chat with / email. How's that for coincidence? There aren't that many Chiarians in NZ!! Anyway, please feel free to email me with any questions you may have about my experience of the whole Chiari thing, and I'll be only too happy to help if I can. Reply: I'm no expert, but my guess would be that hydrocephalus present post natally would have been treated by shunt placement, and perhaps the *cause* of the hydrocephalus (pressure buildup of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain) was never identified at that time. Specifically, hydrocephalus is just one of the many symptoms of Arnold Chiari Malformation (ACM), and would not have been as likely to have been correctly diagnosed 19 years ago. To put it simply, I believe the shunt placement would have been necessary because of undiagnosed ACM. Deborah
