I can look up at least 15 web site of breastfeeding mother whos babys have died of sids. Co-Sleeping is thought by MANY to be a major factor in SIDS. I too had a friend online who lost her baby girl at two months old, and she was Co-Sleeping, and BF'G on demand.......I could even send you the link to her tribute site to her baby, who was born the same month as my Lexi..... SO it DOES happen to babies who BF, and CoSleep...! Stacie

Guest guest
Amy, My thoughts are with you and your friend's family. What a horror! I am so sorry. Wendi A friends baby! From: Feb98@... One of my dear friends from High school called me his evening and told me her new daughter died of SIDS last night. I feel soooo bad for her and I can't stop crying for that little baby. I know my friend blames herself as I think it would be VERY hard not to do. But she did have the baby on a soft mattress and she was laying on her tummy. So please let his be a warning to all. Rememebr that baby's need to be on there backs and make sure there mattress is not to soft and no pillows or blankets that can block there air way. Her sweet girl was only 2 1/2 months old. My heart is just broken for her. Please all of us be careful with our Angles. We just couldn't get by without them. Guest guest
> Co-Sleeping is thought by > MANY to be a major factor in SIDS. With all the > blankets and movment and > pillows and everything. > > Amy While it is true that a bf baby can die of SIDS, I am not aware of any studies that link co-sleeping with SIDS. What distractors say about co-sleeping is that you might roll over on your baby and that you are not teaching your baby to fall asleep on his/her own. It has been theorized that co-sleep can help to prevent SIDS as can bf. There are no clear cut causes for SIDS. Some researchers believe that it is caused by a disturbance in sleep/breathing cycles. It is thought that co-sleeping provides the baby with subconscious cues not to breathe too deeply. There are studies that show that sleeping mothers and babies breathe in tandem. It is also true that countries that universally practice co-sleeping and bf have much much lower rate of SIDS than the US. In fact, in Japan, SIDS is virtually unheard of. Another interesting fact is that in Japan, babies this young are not immunized for DPT. Many parents feel that there is a connection between these two events. The CDC says impossible it is just a coincidence. It is difficult to form an opinion due to a lack of scientific evidence on either side. The book, OUR BABIES OUR SELVES by Meredith Small has quite a bit of info on co-sleeping and bf practices worldwide. Check it out! You might want to encourage your friend to contact HAND (help after neonatal death). They are a very well respected and supportive organization. This is a grief that never heals. --- Feb98@... wrote: > From: Feb98@... > > In a message dated 6/25/99 11:10:44 PM Central > Daylight Time, > Teapott18@... writes: > > << A baby that has benn breastfeed and sleeps with > parents has never > died of SIDS >> > > > Where my I ask did you get that fact??? There is a huge campaigne called " BACK TO SLEEP " which emphasizes placing babies on their backs while they sleep and there has been a 40-60% decrease in SIDS since this has been in place. The choking while babies are lying on their backs is a silly theory since no one that I know or have been in contact with vomit straight up thus not allowing the emisis to go straight back in. You are right though, there are many misconceptions about this which have been present for a long time. Amy was right on about her advice! I work at a large children's hospital and we have had great response from this " BACK TO SLEEP " campaign. My heart goes out to your friend and her family Amy. Guest guest
That is very sad. SIDS is horrible. BUT no one should be made to feel it is their fault when it happens. I know I will have lots of flack from this but here is what we do. My oldest slept on tummy that was what you were supposed to do. slept on her tummy per DR request because of severe gastric reflux, Kaitlyn the same thing, sleeps on his tummy because he used to be a big spitter and that was the ONLY way he would sleep. They are still discovering new things about SIDS. We BF and do not smoke. It is all relevant too once a child can roll over. They will sleep however they are comfy. My son was a preemie also and they had most of the preemie babies on their tummys. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Sherry ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Mom to (8), (5), Kaitlyn (3), and 12/17/98 Also wife to Kenny!
