One of the toughest things on my IE journey is coming up with the answer to,

" What do I want to eat? " B4 I always grabbed sugar or chocolate snacks which was

easy. Now that I'am more aware, I know that will not be satisfying, BUT I'm

getting VERY impatient with myself. I'm laying in bed reading and thinking, and

typing, but cannot put my finger on it, muchless my lips.

What do all of you do to find the answer when you are in this predicament?

I have a hard time with this but what sort of helps is to narrow it down. Do I

want something hot or cold? Sweet or salty? Chewy or crunchy? Sometimes if I

have decided I want something like cereal but am debating between two different

ones I will actually take a small taste of each and see what my tastebuds want.

i wish I knew, because the thing where you try to figure out what taste you want

really does not work for me. I have NO IDEA what taste I want until I am so

hungry I can't wait anymore and just eat cereal. I took someone's suggestion

(Latoya I think) a while ago of making a list of foods or meals you like, so you

can look it over when you feel hungry. That has helped some.

Sometimes I will get a distinct craving and know exactly what I want. I think

it's usually easier when I'm hungry.

Sometimes, I just get a vague idea of what I want or don't want. Like, I know I

want something cool (like sour cream or crispy cool lettuce) and I try to get

something that will fulfill that desire.

Other times when I'm not sure, I start thinking about different foods and what

would appeal to me.

Sometimes I don't really have a particular craving and just make whatever and

eat it or eat what is in the house as long as I don't feel an aversion to eating

it at that time.

I like the idea of creating a list to go through when I'm getting hungry.

This discussion has made me realize that while I still use broad categories

(sweet/salty/crunchy/creamy) to test my 'munch' desires, I also have gotten to

where I can find I really don't want anything food wise and can let the 'graze

crave' go if I don't find I have something I really want to eat.

Hello,

I think it is difficult to find what I really want to eat when I don't allow myself to eat my real cravings. At the beginning of my ie journey and after a couple weeks of not being able to do so, I allowed myself to eat reallly what I wanted, and for me it was always white starch with fat such as chips ro pasta or crackers and cheese. I allowed myself to eat that.. At some point I felt fed up with the starch because it made me feel bloated. So I experimented with vegetable soup, whole grain crackers, humus, and other kind of food that would sustain me a little longer and made me feel better. I try to select food by texture: crunchy, smooth, etc...and taste: sweet, salty, spicy, etc...

For me to decide what to eat is one of the toughest thing because when you have food issues like I do, you want someone (some diet guru, guidelines from an authority, etc...) to decide for you. Then you can rebel. That is still the hardest cycle to break for me.

Hi , here are a couple of ideas from when I had the same question for Gillian :)

 

1.  The Healthier Outcomes workbook has a page called " Feeding Ideas " , organized into morning, mid-day, and evening choices, that you fill in with " feedings " that you already know you like and will fill you to a '7'.

 

2.  use those " I don't really know what I want " moments as an opportunity make a nutrition-packed choice :)

 

3.  make sure you eat SOMETHING before you get ravenous - it's more important to feed yourself than to make the " perfect choice " every time.

 

I know that #2 is kind of close to diet thoughts for some people, but remember the principle of making choices that " honor your health " is part of IE too ... I've actually started to use those times when I don't know what I want, to try something new that is nutritious, and made some new discoveries :)

Yeah, I can see how that could be the case for some people, but I truly have total permission to eat WHATEVER I want. The problem is that I always just grab a protein bar or two or three or four, and they don't do it 4 me. I do this because it's easy and I don't have to think. I've always been a picky but thoughtless eater. I did finally just search the pantry, cupboards, and refrigerator. I decided on crackers and cheese. It took a lot of them to do the trick, but I was definitely satisfied when done, but not sick. I would have eaten the protein bars until I was sick. Can you see how this was different than not giving myself permission? If I would have really wanted the protein bar(s) and knew I could get comfortably full and be satisfied, I would have had them. If I'm eating what I don't't really want I tend to binge on it to just get it over with quickly.
