Guest guest
When I started the process my BMI was around 47, and I only had one comorbidity, namely pre-arthritis changes in both knees. I was approved without having to file any appeal. I certainly understand what you mean about wanting the surgery BEFORE the other comorbs hit. I have family history of high blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney trouble, as well as arthritis in the knees. Oh, and the knees are MUCH happier since losing 155+ pounds! So it can be done, but you might need to fight with them to get it approved, but it is worth it. I would say it is important to have a supportive PCP. If yours isn't supportive, fire him or her and get a new one! Good luck and keep us posted! Patty Matheson wrote: > Hi.. Guest guest
Hi Patty, I don’t know if Kaiser would approve that without an appeal. However, it sounds like you do meet the guidelines set by the NIH (National Institute of Health) so you can always appeal to the DMHC (Department of Managed Health Care) and they will most likely uphold your appeal and force Kaiser to cover your surgery. Best of luck to you. - Lesa - Co-Morbities Hi.. Has anyone been given approval for surgery without Kaiser's requirement of 2 co-morbities if your BMI is under 50? My BMI is 48 and I seem to only have 1 co-morbity. I would like to have the surgery now before I get any other ones, but I don't know if they will understand that or not. Thank you, Patty Riverside

Guest guest
Hi Patty, I also had only one co-morbitity. I was talking to my OB-GYN during my annual exam and she said I had a bulging bladder directly related to my excess weight - that was my second co-morbitity and I was approved 2 weeks later. Hope this helps, Kerre 10/25/04 314/280/251 > > Hi.. > Has anyone been given approval for surgery without Kaiser's > requirement of 2 co-morbities if your BMI is under 50?
