Guest guest
All, I was doing some research about fat discrimation this morning. I've been watching WE(Women's Entertainment) TV lately because they added the Golden Girls (which I love) to their line-up and I like the show the Locator. I've been appalled and offended lately by a set of commercials advertising a new reality show entitled " I Want to Save Your Life. " The commericals basically depict a rather thin MAN sitting in judgement of larger woman. The tag line is something like " First he finds out what you eat, then why you eat it. " First of all, that work is an personal responsiblity...first " I " find out what " I " eat, then " I " find out why I eat it [if that's what I want for my life]. Ofcourse, that personal process is greatly facilitated by Intuitive Eating. Anyways, I was looking for an organization that I could contact about this blatant discrimination or see if someone is organizing some type of protest! Ofcourse, I encountered the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA). However, there was no link to contact them that I could find. I wish that organization's name was the National Association for the Advancement of BODY EQUALITY, because as long as anyone is discriminated against, it reflects on and affects all of us, not matter what our size, shape, color, sexual preference...etc. In part due to my body type, my issues with overeating for my size and lack of regular movement for most of my life would make me a " target " for this type of show. My brother who is tall and slim and who has also used foods, sometimes in amounts that make me sick to even think about eating in one sitting, would not be a target. I didn't really get the idea of " skinny fat people, " until reading Overcoming Overeating. My brother even made a comment last night, after I showed him one of these commercials, that he knows he would be much larger then he is, if it wasn't for his body type/genes. Unlike me, my brother has always been super hyper and active and I think it's in part due to his biological body type. The implications of a show like this, that it's ok to target someone with a shape that is deemed unacceptable or unhealthy is crazy. I'll probably write directly to WEtv and see who else out their thinks this new show is misguided. For me, this new show represents forces of artificial separation/disconnection. More and more, I'm finding it important to actively align my energy to forces of wholeness in this world... On a positive note, I discoverd an awesome brochure on Body image and the struggle for equality that I will upload to this group. Definitely take a look at this file...there's some great information in it. I also discovered LOVE YOUR BODY DAY through my research this morning. Who Knew? I didn't:) The Day seems to have been created by the National Organization for Women (NOW) Foundation, which is a fantastic evolution of the activism of this organization. Love Your Body Day is October 21, 2009 The website is http://loveyourbody.nowfoundation.org/index.html. I'd love to celebrate this day with my fellow IErs. I'm going to plan something like a massage on that day and some other things to care for my body and would love to hear what anyone else does. I'll send a reminder a month or week before Love Your Body Day. Latoya Practicing IE since Jan '

Thanks for into and website. I need a massage NOW for a wrecked knee and fall on my stairs two week ago. I think I may have torn ligaments or muscles and cannot keep living on this drug ibipropin much longer. Everytime I go off it I can see I am still banged up pretty badly. Might have to resort to a doctors visit. I have not read the books. They are these listed on the home page. Any Others???? INTUITIVE EATING books: " Intuitive Eating " by Tribole and Elyse Resch " Thin Within " by Judy and Arthur Halliday " Diets Don't Work " by Bob Schwartz " Why Weight? " by Geneen Roth I was just in bookstore territory yesterday and didnt have the book names with me. HOWEVER my library can get any book I want so will go that route this week. Am working on a long hard read about Roosevelt and its getting very old and tiresome and harder to read. Might give it one more day and thats IT. Guest guest
Thanks for sharing Latoya! And what a great idea to get a massage on Love Your Body Day!! Maybe I'll do that too! My sister is a "skinny fat person" too. My whole family has eating issues and she has always eaten more than me but yet she stays skinny for some reason and I am fat. I figure she must have a fast metabolism....she can't sit still and is constantly fidigiting. I remember one summer when we were both trying to lose weight. We did A LOT of walking together and at the end of the summer when she had lost weight and I hadn't my mother said "well she really worked for it." UM hello.....I was walking right along side of her the whole summer long and she was right beside me when the chip bag was open! That show sounds awful. Good for you for writing a letter.
