Guest guest
This is a parent's worst nightmare and it brings tears to my eyes. I wish I could help with a testimonial, but we are too new to the diet I can't help in that way, but I am so sorry you have to go through this. I just wanted to offer this support to you. Robbie Need letters of support for child abuse case Dear Group, I was a member of this group when it was " Elaine's Children " . I am the mother of a 13 yr. old girl who has fairly severe autism. I started the SCDiet over a year ago, after having tried GFCFSFCF, etc. etc, and many, many other interventions. Although her response to the SCDiet has been small, it is promising, nevertheless. I was turned in for child abuse last week because of her diet. The accuser must be someone either in her school who works with her there, or someone in her after-school behavioral program, because they knew quite a bit about her diet and what I feed her. I was really angry, to say the least, that this person didn't have the nerve to come to me face to face and talk to me. Anyway, I need short letters, testimonials from those of you who have your child on this diet and your child carries a diagnosis of autism or PDD or otherwise is on the spectrum, who have had improvements that nothing else could give you, from this diet. Also, if your child is one who seems to always be hungry, grazing for food, please mention that. They claimed I am starving her, though she has always, always suffered with an insatiable appetite. I have never been able to give her enough food, because I think the need to chew is so great in her. She eats lots of inedibles, too, and always has. It's more of a sensory thing than a food thing. And when you reply, please delete this letter off of the page first, so I don't have to cut and paste all your letters to another document. I will cut off the top of the letter so your email and identifying information isn't seen, but I would appreciate not having my coaching plea added to the bottom. ) In advance: Thanks to all those of you who will take the time to help me with this. I know your time is precious and I greatly appreciate your taking the time to write your child's story of success (or even partial success). Thanks, again. Guest guest
Dearest, brave Marina, my son Nick was diagnosed as 'somewhere in the autistic spectrum' at the age of 2 1/2. We did not know where the road of autism would lead us, as we had no clue. No information was given at all. My son's first years were years of miserable growth, despite a normal appetite. He also was sick lots of times with infections, combined with diarrea during these first 4 years. We saw doctors, but they only prescribed a drug to more or less calm him down. The diarrea was something that 'came with the autism package, madam'. My son was trying to scream his way forward in the meantime. We refused to give him drugs and by shere luck (+ the internet) stumbled upon a gluten free and casein free diet (in short GFCF). Substantial progress set in. For his sake, we had to avoid many, many of his 'favourite' foods. But what are favourite foods when you cannot tell your parents " that tasted nice! " After 2 years of GFCF, his school doctor was alarmed. Nick was terribly underweight. At the age of 6, he was 14.3 kilos (more like something for a healthy 2-year-old). " You have to do something about that " he told me. All I could do was literally raise my arms in despair because I knew no way to let my son gain some weight. Neither did he. He only suggested using more butter and cream. In december 2002, I read about the Specific Carbohydrates Diet (SCD). Initially I threw the accompanying book in the corner, because there wasn't a word about autism. My husband convinced me to try for a month. Now, after 17 months on SCD, my son has gained more than 6 (six) kilos. I weighed him yesterday and he is now 20.4 kilos. This weight has increased steadily over the past months. He now tells us several times a day that the numerous snacks are 'yummy' and that he loves us. The progress he has made in weight can be easily measured and is in the books. The progress he has made in his language, sociability and play, cannot be measured, although I have a couple of reports plus 4 videos that will testify. If any of that material will be of use to you, please indicate. I will gladly hand over all necessary and convincing material. Guest guest
Thanks, Robbie. It's mostly irritating at this point, since this is someone in the school or her behavioral program. They know too much about the diet (according to the accusation) to be a casual observer. It means I can't trust ANYONE!!! This is the second time I have been turned in. The first time was because is a runner, and is always running away. Instead of wasting taxpayer money on such nonsense, why don't they offer to help?????? Thanks, again. -- In pecanbread , " Little Britches Boutique " <robbie@l...> wrote: > This is a parent's worst nightmare and it brings tears to my eyes. Guest guest
Thanks, Carol, for a great letter. > > To Whom it may Concern > > I have been a subscriber and supporter of several Internet " list servs " for The Specific Carbohydrate Diet and have archived the progress of many of the 960 members on the autism group for children. Eighty per cent of those following the diet have experienced improvement. Some have lost their autism diagnosis. > > The diet is healthy and balanced. The exclusions are mainly carbohydrates ( certain sugars and starches) that are difficult and painful to digest. Left in the system, they promote bacterial overgrowth which is painful and interferes with the gut and brain connection. The diet has attracted attention, hope and excitement in the autism health care community. > > Meat, fish, poultry, nuts, fruits, vegetable and incubated dairy products (optional) are allowed in generous amounts. There are sufficient mono saccaharide carbohydrates to maintain balance. > > The author of this diet and many other parents had just about given their children up as hopeless and the diet was a last resort for them and proved to be a turning point. > > Before condemning this poor mother, you should at least take the time to read what the diet consists of and the science behind it in the book " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " by Elaine Gottschall. > > When the children start the diet they can be very picky eaters and exhibit detox symptoms that make them appear ill, but once this passes, improvement usually happens and the children's willingness to expand their food choices grows. > > Olease give marina a chance to heal fer child > > Best regards, > > Carol Frilegh > > Celiac Disease, Toronto, Ontario, SCD Diet followed for 3 years.
