Guest guest
Hello, I am new to this group as well as brand new to Intuitive Eating, in fact, just began reading the book. I have been a yo-yo dieter for many years and have decided (before getting this book) to never diet again. My first question is how to tell what you want once you determine you are actually hungry. Nothing pops out, it might just take time and practice. Thanks.
Guest guest
I agree on the time and practice. Just give yourself complete permision and your body will start talking to you. Welcome!! Guest guest
Welcome Waldi! You are right - it will take time and practice. Ever consider that 1) if nothing pops out for you that you may not be (body) hungry? or 2) one of the hold backs you may be experiencing may be a reflection of diet mentality/food police reactions? If you have LONG thought of foods in a 'good/bad' light, those 'labels' may still be haunting you, even when just thinking about may appeal to you when you really are hungry. This could be your first baby step in IE. Guest guest
Hi and welcome! It sounds lke you're going to get a lot from this board. I have just started intuitive eating too. That is a very good question you ask. Someone with more experience in IE will be able to give you probably a better answer, but for me, you're right, it did take time and practice. I sort of would just scan in my mind or even visually and not try not to use my brain/thinking to decide. I would ask, " what do I want? " or " what do I feel like? " I kind of had a head start with all that because when I started IE, my IBS and gastritis were flared up and I could not eat certain things. I learned that my intuition new much better what I should eat in those times. I didn't een have to look at food lists taht told me what I should eat. I just knew. But even that took practice. Take care and again, welcome. KT (Warrior) > > Hello, I am new to this group as well as brand new to Intuitive Eating, in fact, just began reading the book. Guest guest
Another thing to remember is that there are NO WRONG choices! In time you will get better at choosing a better 'match' for your hunger. Don't be surprised (now) if you want to choose what you (now) think of as 'bad' foods - that could be normal rebellion which may need to run its course too. Eating is supposed to be a pleasure - enjoy and have fun with it Katcha IEing since March 2007 > > > > Hello, I am new to this group as well as brand new to Intuitive Eating, in fact, just began reading the book. Guest guest
Hi Crystal, I too am new to IE, still reading the book! I have had the exact same feelings as you, I was never really physically hungry, only mentally for a long time. If I did feel any hunger pangs while in the " diet mode " I would normally just overeat so as not to experience that. Just the last couple of days I am beginning to relate to how I actually feel. I was doing some heavy cleaning this morning and all of a sudden felt hungry (for real) about 10 am and wanted onion dip and crackers, so I made some and found that I really only wanted a few and did not overeat. Wow, what a novelty! Like you I hope it becomes easier as time goes on. I am been working really hard at not feeling guilty or even concerned with what I eat, just trying to get the hang of it. Maybe someone with more experience can answer this: Even though I feel I am doing pretty well, I still want to lose a few pounds, and have to get over thinking about that right now, so I can do the basics first.
