Guest guest
also, yo-yo dieting increases your risk much, much more than being overweight alone.  plus, if it was easy to lose weight we would have all done it already, right? we all already know being overweight isn't healthy. but turning that knowledge into healthy results is a lot more complicated.  and as a health care provider, i'm curious where you got that statistic from... do you know what the source for that was? at what age is that statistic true? at what height? with what percentage of muscle? if you are 5'10 " than being 140 would be bad for your health!  so don't worry, i dont think things are as dire or as black and white as they might seem. i am sure that IE is the best way, in the big picture, to maintain our health as best we can.  Judy,When I read statistics like the one you posted I think about my grandmother who was 'overweight' for as long as I can remember (50 some odd years) and had an 'enlarged heart' since she was around 80+ years old. The dame made it to 102 years only losing weight in the last couple of years of her life! KatchaIEing since March 2007 > > For me at 63..the next road to ruin wont be feeling > unsuccessful because I am over weight but problems with possible heart > attacks. > Lucky again.> I make the above statement as I have learned that heart attack is major health issue for women as they get older AND that the difference between being 140 lbs and 180 lbs is an 80% higher chance of a heart attack. MAN that statistic alone is one to help you eat more wisely and stay as healthy as you can. > Judy>

I have two other sisters in their late 50's to early 60s and the issue all our doctors is concerned about is possible heart problems at our age. Well that and diabetes. My other two sisters are pretty healthy, climbing mountains - doing yoga - long hikes and walks, exercising in gyms etc. yet their Doctors tell them as well that heart problems for women as they age is a major health issue to be concerned with. I do however have a friend who is a reflexologist. She laughs at the high blood pressure chlosteral figures (sp. wrong sorry!) they say are dangerous as her Mother who lived to 102 had the highest figures in that regard that any doctor would ever want to see and had no health problems. Her Mother stayed instead in the loving health care hands of her Daughter rather than the medical profession and lived a long and healthy life. Guest guest
I am currently reading "Shrink yourself" it sounds like a diet book, but the word shrink is a pun alluding to the IE philosophy. This book deals with counseling ourselves through the issues that lead us to emotionally! I've read Geneen Roth's books and IE, but this one takes the prize! Is this one on the recommended reading list? If not, it needs to be added! I love this concept and feel somewhat dense for not realizing it myself. Our bodies are quite the miracle, huh? So, intuitive eating is just listening to your hunger signal and then eating until you're satisfied but not stuffed, right? Is that it in a nutshell?I must admit that my biggest fear about intuitive eating is how often I'll get to eat. You see, I love to eat. If I ate only when I felt hungry, I might only get to eat once a day. I don't know...I've never tried it. How about you all? How often do you actually get hungry?I was thining about my kids and their eating habits. They often come to me at times I find inconvenient because they are not " meal times " saying they are hungry. They snack on something and then go about their business. Then I blame them not eating at meal times on this snacking. I am rethinking this now. They actually DO listen to thier bodies. They are not always hungry at the exact times I serve meals. They do not eat willingly during a time they don't feel hungry. Eating is not " fun " to them like it is to me. They truly eat because they're hungry and then move on to play. Eating is more like the " play " in my day, I guess. I'd rather be doing that because everything else I'm doing (save from sitting on the computer) is work. Does that make sense?Well, I'm rambling. It's nice to put these thoughts out here. I will be 36 years old tomorrow. My husband of 11 years decided to join the Army National Guard in Nov. 2008. Guest guest
Did it take you a long time to get there??? I go to school and sometimes I have to go for long periods of time without food. I have to learn to stay on a schedule instead of binging one day and starving the next. That is not healthy. My schedule is crazy right now. Guest guest
Lora, you may want to check out Overcoming Overeating, especially their suggestion of carrying a food bag. It seems that when one thinks about it for yourself, you manage to find 'portable' foods that you love so that you CAN eat when (body) hungry. Guest guest
Hello, my name is and I'd like to be part of this group. I've been dieting and bingeing for the last 32 years, and I'm sick of it. Since reading IE I have lots of questions, mostly along the lines of " now that I've given up dieting, how do I stop bingeing? " I hope this nice group can help me find the answers. Thank you for letting me join you.

Since reading IE I have lots of questions, mostly along the lines of " now that I've given up dieting, how do I stop bingeing? " Doesn't the IE book suggest legalizing foods? That has helped me and many others to squash bingeing. I remember being doubtful and this taking longer than I wanted it too, but in the end I did pretty much over my trigger foods. Dear old chocolate doesn't 'call' me like it used to! As you go thru this process, do post your fears and successes as that not only helps you, but others too. BEST wishes and the group is here to help too. Katcha IEing since March 2007 I hope this nice group can help me find the answers. I am a part time grad. student and I work part time. > > I came across this group by searching for online support groups dealing with intuitive eating. I have struggled with both binging and restricting for about five years now and although I don't deal with the extremes I used to, I still engage in emotional eating which makes me shameful and afraid of what I am doing to my body. I have had experience with therapy, nutrition, support groups and 12-step groups around this issue....currently just therapy and one support group. I am looking for an additional support network because I have found that listening to my body helps stabilize my eating the most. I haven't read any book about intuitive eating yet, but I would like to in the near future and intuitive eating is the current approach I am discussing with my therapist about regulating my eating. What I hope to get out of any sort of recovery is help with coping skills, self care and the negative thinking trap because I believe those things are at the core of what created this mess for me. I look forward to connecting with you all. > > > i could've written this myself. i am 24 and have been dealing with restricting/bingeing cycles. my main problem right now is emotional (stress)eating. i look forward to hearing what works for you.and hopefully i will be able to make progress as well. right now i am working with CBT and trying to find coping strategies that work.i know i probablyu need to see someone for more help on my issues. but right now i'm trying to do this myself. it is hard.
