Guest guest
, I can't give any specific advice about weight loss as I need that myself. I can tell you that the greatest service you can do for yourself and Angel is to learn to accept your body the way it is. If you need more exercise than work on getting it, but allowing your body image to run your life is asking for trouble. I have struggled with this for so long and that is how I know. When I was the thinnest in my life I felt horrible about myself. My body ran my life and it was all that I based everything on. My happiness depended on how I saw myself in the mirror each day. When I thought I looked bad, I felt bad too. This type of thinking really takes a toll. You become so dependent on your outside image that it stands in the way of accomplishing goals. Your body will NEVER be like it was when you were 16 and had no children. That is something that needs to be accepted. If you can learn to be proud of who you are no matter what you look like on the outside, you can give Angel the greatest gift of her life. If you can teach her that it is what's inside that is important not whether or not you have fat rolls, than she will be able to go far. I know how hard it is to not be pleased with the body you have. Try to do what you can to get yourself healthier, but don't sacrafice breastfeeding or your health for an image in a mirror. You are so beautiful and have so much going for you don't let all that go chasing after a phantom. Wendi Weight Loss HELP! I need to lose some weight BIG TIME!! Guest guest
If you're interested in exercise videotapes (the best thing I have found, since with 3 kids I am unable to make it to the gym myself), I recommend (if you like dancing and country music) the aerobic country line dancing videos. They are lots of fun and you can keep up with the current dances - for that once in a lifetime chance when you actually get out of the house w/o kids to have some fun!! Guest guest
, I second everything Wendi says. I too have battled weight gain my entire adult life. Acceptance can be difficult. Concentrate on the fabulous thing you are doing for your baby. Reread the posts on formula bearing in mind that that is only the tip of the iceberg. While it is true that bf increases your appetite the reason is that it takes calories to make. An oz of bm contains 20 calories plus you burn some during production, so in theory if you are able to reduce your caloric intake you will lose weight. I don' think you burn too many calories mixing formula and pouring it into a bottle. So you see, by bf you are actually ahead. The hard part is curbing the appetite. Bf makes me really, really hungry. In fact, bf moms need more calories than pregnant moms. The best place to go for help with weight loss is Weight Watchers. Their program is the only one I know of recommended for bf moms. Their programs focus on real food not some gimmick or drug. Give your local chapter a call. They are in the phone book. FYI--the recommendations of most peds for starting foods with bf babies is 6 months. FF babies start cereal at 4 months for extra iron which a bf baby doesn't need. Are you sure you are not starting foods too early? I mention this because early introduction has been linked to food allergies down the road. One last thing , FF babies have more weight problems as adults than bf babies. Do what you can to save your daughter this heartache, keep breeastfeeding! --- " A. Guest guest
, I'm like you and lose the weight once I wean. When was still nursing at 17 months and I found out I was pregnant, she had already cut back her nursing schedule and I was dropping 5-8 pounds a month with no effort. It was wonderful. Just the slowed schedule was helping my weight. But it was for nothing since I was pregnant to boot! is now 17 months and is nursing way more than did at this age, so I'm still overweight. I'm not talking about a little padding... I was a size 5/7 when I got pregnant with , and a 14 when I had him. I gained 35 pounds when I was pregnant with him, lost *3* after delivering a 9 pounder, and only lost maybe 10 more in the next year or so. When I got pregnant with , and then , it all just added up. I'm still a 14 or a 16 and it just kills me to look in a mirror. I remember taking size 9 velvet sweats to the hospital to wear home after was born and being genuinely shocked when I had to send DH home for some of his sweats. I have also gotten to the point where I would rather spend these few years (it's been 5 now) overweight and work it off later (I'll have way more than 5) and let my children get the best possible start in life that I can give them. I figure their health outrates my waistline for now. Since is old enough that if anything happened to my supply, he could survive *G*, I have started going to aerobics at the gym. I'm getting that 5-8 pounds a month, but with alot of effort. I do know that theoretically, more calories are spent if a muscle needs them than if fat needs them. In other words, the more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you will burn. You could do some toning/strengthening exercises at home -- with , too -- and start adding back some muscles. Do arm/shoulder/back exercises using canned food as weights. If you include , maybe put on a CD of silly songs and work out together to it. Do some jumping jacks. Kids are fascinated to try to master that one! Do some simple leg lifts and have see how many he can do with you. That's a great time to start counting. Just do sets of " four " and he will catch on while you won't be focused on making it to any specific number... like 100, or 20. You will also be teaching him rhythm, not to mention eye-hand coordination and large motor skills... all while getting a little exercise. As for the old wives tale and weight loss while breastfeeding... it's not a myth. Some people get the benefit and some don't... just like some babies get the benefit of breastmilk's protection of food allergies and some don't. But then, if you're eating peanut butter or chocolate, or both, every day, you're sabotaging yourself anyways!!

Guest guest
Hi Amber, Well, I wouldn't worry about the weight loss for now--it took you 9 months to gain the weights--so it seems reasonable that it would take 9 months to lose it. You might maintain some of the weight til you stop nursing--then it will probably drop off very easily. When my daughter weaned I lost the extra 10 lbs without even trying. For drastic weight loss--I recommend the " window cleaning " diet " <g> My DH and I own/operate a window cleaning business--and last summer when he was ill, I took over doing it myself--4 days a week/weekly/3 months straight in July/Aug/Sept of 98--I lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks and another 5 lbs over the next month or so and maintained it. I was finally back in jeans/slacks I hadn't worn in years--and that December got pregnant again (acccident/blessing). So I figure that if I feel like it takes too long to lose the weight when Lexi is weaned--I'll contact a couple of friends of ours who are window cleaners and go out with them in the summer heat<g> I'd leave the house before 6 AM--miracle for me--and be home usually by 3 or so. I worked inside malls and outside a bit in the heat. And I did stay hydrated, etc.<g> So, for drastic results this can work fine--and you can pick up cash on the side also<ggg> W. Guest guest
Kurt Here... Hello... I have been skinny all my life and believe this RP has been with me since I was six years old. Like , I gain when on prednisone (40 Mgs will get you 30 lbs). When off prednisone, the weight disappears dramatically. I ride a tour bike about 3 times a week (when the Northeast weather permits) for about an hour each time and this may be part of my being skinny (5' 7'', 150 lbs.), but I ride the bike more in hopes that it counters the effects of or helps reverse the RP. People I work with notice when I come off prednisone ( " like magic the weight is gone " ).

Guest guest
I have to agree with this... I have looked up the WW program online, out of curiosity, and counting points is no different than other programs that involve counting calories, counting carbs, or counting fat. And, in fact, what goes into the calculation of points involves counting of calories, fat, and fiber! They just put it into one formula and set a point value per food based on the formula. So, in essence, doing Weight Watchers is like counting three variables at once. I found a points calculator online, and was shocked by how ridiculous some of the values were for certain foods. I don't want to get into specific numbers here, as I feel that that's unhelpful; but I felt that Weight Watchers was in many ways even more harsh than the restrictive diets I have put myself on in the past, and given that I was once diagnosed with EDNOS (all criteria for AN except that my BMI was slightly too high), that's saying something. Weight Watchers is NOT a lifestyle choice, as they claim it to be on TV, and it certainly isn't intuitive eating. If you've used all your points for the day and you're still hungry, you " shouldn't " have anything else. And if you've used all your flex points AND your daily points and you're STILL hungry, you actually CAN'T have anything else. I'm sorry, but that screams " diet " and " restriction " to me. And the fact that most of your food must by default be very high fiber and low fat is also extremely restrictive. To make this long story short: I hate WW, and I hate the diet mentality it helps to impose on people who honestly believe that WW is a " healthy lifestyle choice " . It is NOT. It's a diet that they MASQUERADE as a healthy lifestyle choice, in order to GET OUR MONEY and keep people bound to them for as long as they possibly can. The moguls of WW are still moguls, and their priority is still our money and our devotion... and they're starting to learn all the right words to say to get us to believe their propaganda. I know a lot of people gain weight after they quit smoking, so i think it would be good to be prepared for that... smoking is WAAAAAY worse for you than weight gain!!!.... but not everyone does gain weight... but definitely give yourself lots of pats on the back! and welcome! abby Am tired of beating myself up when I gain weight. Guest guest
Congrats on the no more smoking!! I think, like just about any group who no longer wishes to diet, its a matter of getting more in touch with your body's needs, listening to when its really hungry and when it isn't, learning more about what the body really needs to feel truly fed and all the nutrients needed for a healthier body, getting emotional situations either under control or handled, and learning how to take small steps at a time or one thing at a time.
