Guest guest
Hi Deneesa, Welcome to the list, lots of good people here to help you along... If you are having trouble getting Hannah's ketones to stay up higher (bear in mind tho' that some kiddies do well on just moderate - not all can handle the high level of ketosis), it may be a calorie issue, possibly too many? Or meals not spaced appropriately to her activity times? Otherwise, if blood sugar rises, this can often bring ketones down - and this is common when dealing with an infection, glucose rises in response to the infection. Is she well and truly over that yet? If not, it may be a waiting period until she is fully well again. The last thing, which I think Patti (?) mentioned, was that if calories are on the other hand, set too low, a defence type mechanism can kick in, whereby the body startes producing it's own glucose to compensate for dietary insufficiency, but as far as I know, this tends to happen after a slightly longer period of time than you are talking here. Urine ketones do often test higher at night than in the morning, basically I think because the body is not as active, not as much caloric fat is therefore being burned to produce ketones. And yes, dilution of urine can affect how the levels appear, after a month in hospital recently with and very regular blood ketone testing, I can honestly say that urine ketones are SO not as accurate as they need to be. I would suggest trying glucose testing at home to make sure this is not interfering with ketone production, as well as discussing this further with your dietician - Hannah IS having seizures now, so she does need to look closer at what could be going on with ketones, calories etc. What ratio is she on btw? Does Hannah have many meds on board? Toxicity can occur at about this stage, the metabolism on the diet is different, med levels can therefore be affected. Toxicity can definitely bring about seizures. Guest guest
Meds could be interfering. Excess body fat can also do it. Is she skinny, average or above average for weight? She could also just be getting too many calories (even if she's thin)....... or, as another parent or two around here found out recently, not enough or too little protein. If they aren't getting the correct amount of protein, it can throw things off. Are you using mostly cream for her fat? Supplementing with flax oil (as part of the fat allowance) can help boost ketones, so say some of our parents. I have found coconut oil does, too. Tell me more about her ...... what ratio, protein, what's her weight like, etc. Patti, mom to Katera (former Keto Kid) and list moderator.
