Donna,Welcome to the group. I've found this group to be very helpful. I hope you will too. I can relate to your struggles with food and with exercise. SharonSubject: very fat newbieTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Date: Wednesday, August 5, 2009, 1:26 PM

Hi

I am a newbie. I joined this group a while back. But I have never posted

I am a lot older than most of you, and I should know better. But I just can't seem to stop eating. A couple of years ago I lost 70 pounds.

I started with giving up sugar. I am a sugar addict. Then I wouldn't eat but one meal a day and plenty of fruit, and nothing for a few hours before I went to bed. But guess what? I have gained just about all of it back. When I was young I went on every diet and took every diet pill the doctor would give me. I finally learned there is no magic bullet

or pill. I use to exercise a lot. But I am handicapped now and I can't seem to find anything that don't make me hurt. I got a bicycle but I can't use it because of my knee. So I got a treadmill and it makes my back and hips hurt. (I have broke my back in 4 different places)

The doctors tell me I should get some exercise but the way my back and foot it (I had to have my foot fused because of a nerve diease) they can't really tell me too. I just want to find the strength to quit eating all the time. I hope this group can help.

Hi Donna,

As far as losing weight and gaining it back--we've all been there, done that. :)

With IE, you will learn to trust your body to signal you when you're hungry, what you want to eat, and when you're full. But it takes time. In the beginning, all of us have to learn to recognize the signals and reassure ourselves that we'll give our bodies what they need. This means surrounding ourselves with favorite foods, which means stocking up so that we won't feel deprived, because feeling deprived always leads to bingeing.

Since I've been on IE, I've legalized many foods, including candy bars. Some of my favorites don't even tempt me anymore. Although I haven't weighed myself since April, I can tell from my clothes that I gained some and then lost some. But it's not so important anymore. You wouldn't believe how freeing this is. :)

Welcome to the adventure!

Gracie

Welcome Donna! Have you read the IE book?? It really is life changing.

Everything in it makes so much sense, that it's almost amazing that I never

thought of any of it on my own. I look forward to hearing more from you! :)

Hi Donna! I am right there with you. I have been questioning myself lately wondering if I can really do this. I do good until I get home from work and then it's like I am out of control. I just wanted you to know you are not alone. One little thing that helped me a lot was being told that its not about being in

'control' - its really that YOU are 'in charge'!! Control equates to outside

inputs and resonates with 'failure!' to me, while being In Charge returns the

decisions and responsibility to ME. Its marvelous when one finds that yes, you

can and will take charge in our life :)

Best to you - Katcha

Welcome, welcome! Hope is good to have. Even more important than hope, in my

opinion, is action. Take some suggestions about books you can read from those

here. I personally recommend Intuitive Eating as a wonderful beginning point.

It sounds like you are at a good starting place, knowing that there is no magic

pill anymore.

Don't worry about exercise. Many lose weight or maintain their weight without

exercise. How much food we ingest plays a much greater part in weight

loss/maintenance than exercise.

Stick around. We all help each other.

Thank you, Katcha, for your words. I needed to hear that, and will remind myself everyday that it is not about being in control, but being in charge!
