Hey Jo,

I've been dealing with similar issues...diagnosed with GERD last year & also

injured my chest a year ago (still causing trouble). I've started down the path

of holistic health & have come across a few things that seem to be helping.

I've always been fascinated by the mind/body connection & started doing some

reading...one book in particular, " You Can Heal Your Life, " by Louise Hay, has

been interesting with connecting various health problems to emotional/mental

states. For example, the gastro stuff I'm dealing with is supposed to be

related to fear--which just happens to be my #1 emotional issue! I'm not sure I

agree with 100% of what's in the book--but I really like taking a look at my

life as a whole. It feels much more empowering than resigning myself to the

fact that I have some 'condition' that I just have to live with.

As for IE...I'm starting over with it after a couple of years of super-crazy

'eating-for-my-best-health' behavior, which interestingly enough didn't help me

overcome health issues or to lose weight & just increased my desire to binge. I

dropped a lot of my diet mentality since reading the IE book the first go

around, which was awesome! But since dealing with some doctors & nutritionists

who are anti-sugar, anti-white flour, and all kinds of other things--it was all

too easy for me to fall under their spell. But I know in my gut that black &

white, rigid food plans don't work for me. So I'm back to IE & am happy to have

found this group!

With exercise, I've been working to divorce it from my weight & anything to do

with food, since I'm a recovering exercise bulimic. Focusing on moving,

stretching & energizing my body feels so much better when I'm not thinking about

calories burned! Sorry if I've rambled on...if you feel like sharing more, I'm

happy to listen =)

injury and I think my body is trying to tell me something. I've been eating a

lot more than normal. Probably a good idea if I reread the Intuitive Eating

book. I've had a few thoughts of going on another diet but feel that I really

need to get to my club to work out as that's what's missing. Maybe with

rereading the book and my new contract with scheduled shifts will help. My

eating has been feeling kind of like the old last supper eating as the old

saying keeps coming in my head when I'm finally working out again I will be able

to get my eating under control again.

I think the best thing for me right now is to get moving. I've been making

excuses that I'm too tired but with this last injury it has been an eye opener

for me. I'm not doing too bad with my eating lately but I need a release. I'm

slowly working my way up from short walks to longer walks, then maybe running,

then back to boxing (recreational only) - that is my favourite. I went once in

January and have not been back since and it's frustrating as I so enjoyed it.

I'm sorry to hear of your condition and glad to hear you are back with the IE

principle. I had a couple of thoughts of going on another diet but quickly

decided that will never be for me as you stated it sets me up for binging, which

I have not done as much lately. I have not really been following the IE

principle either as I was feeling sorry for myself and eating constantly. I'm

going to reread the book soon as I'm in the middle of another good novel.

Ramble away mon ami, ramble away - that's my motto.

Thanks,

Jo.

I can totally relate to the self-pity--especially with injurying myself & not

being able to do all the stuff I love, like yoga, swimming, just picking up

anything heavier than 15 lbs! Today I go for my first visit to an acupuncturist

& am very excited to see what she can do for me. I'll let you know how that

goes...

I've been pretty resistant to exercise lately, and I do think it's got a lot to

do with my injury hanging on so long. Sometimes I just have to talk myself into

a short workout & sometimes it turns into more. It is very tough for me to have

motivation for exercise when I'm exhausted though, so I don't push too hard if

my body needs rest. My goal with exercise is to find ways to make it fun--like

walking a gorgeous greenway and tuning into nature, or doing step aerobics while

watching old Alfred Hitchcock on rainy days, or I take my favorite magazine to

the gym. I'm thankful to be done with that period of my life where exercise was

punishment.

I hope you find the balance you're looking for with food & exercise...I believe

the IE path is the best thing for this! take care,

Jenn
