Guest guest
Hi, Lately I've been hearing a lot of questions/fear about people getting worse after surgery. Has anyone out there actually gotten worse due to the decompression surgery? I know many do not improve after surgery (I am one of them), but I only remember 1 or 2 members saying they thought the decompression surgery left them worse off than before. Is this correct? Pam J. mbpdlw@... wrote: Hi, It's Debbie from NC. I went to see Dr.Rosner today for a second opinion. He wants me to have a table tilt test (which I don't know anything about) and another MRI that shows spinal fluid flow. Then I get to make the decision whether I want the surgery or not. I don't have symptoms that are real painful and I can do just about anything I want to. I have nystagmus in the left eye and a slight droop of my right eye. I have a few other symptoms that are irritating. Dr. Rosner said I have one of the biggest chiari malformations he has seen. I also have a syrinx that is 30 mm x 8 x 8 mm. I just don't want to be worse off after surgery if I decide to do it. If anybody has any advice I would be glad to hear it. Guest guest
Hi, For what it is worth, I will tell you what I know about Rosner. He was one of the first to connect Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with Chiari Malformation. In this respect, he has helped lots of people. He also feels that milimeters of herniation is not the most important test of whether a person has Chiari. I agree with him, and so does Dr. Milhorat. He has a controversial reputation for doing surgery on people who other doctors will not do surgery on. Like persons who have less than 5 mm herniation. I have heard persons on this website who have said he operates on people who have no physical problems. I do NOT believe this is true. I think he is willing to operate on close cases, whereas other surgeons will not touch the person with a ten foot pole. I think this is corageous on his part. The only thing he does that I disagree with, is he usually removes the tonsils. Mine were cauterized, instead of totally removed. Most neuros will tell you that the tonsils have no purpose. However, I feel that we don't really know enough about them to just chop them off. In some cases this may be necessary, because there is just no room for them. However, I wouldn't go removing them on the first surgery. I have heard of many patients having good results with Dr. Rosner, and a few who haven't. I think you should talk to him if you have a problem. Pam J. mbpdlw@... wrote: Hi, I have had negative information on Dr.Rosner. He is my doctor and will be doing my surgery if I choose to have it. Guest guest
Dear Kim, I am sorry that you don't have the support that you need. I had a lot of complications with a faulty shunt and meningitis at the same time I was having my decompression surgery. This caused me to loose my short term, and now my long term memory. I dont' know how my husband was before surgery, but I know that when I first came home it was rough. I had spent two months in ICU and rehab and I didn't know my husband or family. My mom tells me that my husband was an a**. I am glad that I don't remember. But now he is my lifeline. He is so understanding and compationate. He and I have reached a point in our relationship that goes beyond everything. He and I have gone through hell and we are still together. He now accepts me for who I am now and lets me go at my own pace. He has also given up his life and dreams to take care of me and make me and our girls happy. I don't know what kind of man my husband was before my surgery, but he is now the kind of person that I wish I could be. Don't give up on your husband just yet. When everything is over, he may just surprise you and be everything that you need. I hope that your surgery goes well. We will keep you in our prayers. Best of Luck, Debbi
Guest guest
Kim, If you don't have a church home, that'd be a good start. I got a lot of support before and after my surgery from my friends at church. Sounds like a pastor's counseling might be helpful for the marriage as well. I'm not big on criticizing others and how they conduct their marriage, all I'll say on the topic is this...I don't consider your husband's attitude ordinary or acceptable. What you choose to do about it is your choice, but please don't feel like that's something that anyone would think in that situation, something you " deserve, " or something you ought to have to put up with. Being married to someone who is chronically ill is very difficult, and I have a lot of sympathy to my wife, your husband, all our spouses. But what he's suggested is either a poorly thought out attempt at humor or incredibly thoughtless if he's serious. Making arrangements for some alternate entertainment (what the heck is a spoonbill, anyway?) would be appropriate and thoughtful...our partners go through a lot over the years when we're this sick. But no, putting off the surgery in order to hunt or fish or whatever that is doesn't cut it. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Wow, that would make a great story. Everybody gets a second chance here. Can you imagine, if you were having marrital problems prior to your surgery and after your amnesia you come home and hubby now appreciates you more than he ever realized, after almost losing you and he becomes the most wonderful man. In the meantime, you're accepting him as he now is, WONDERFUL, and you're not torchured by the past (if you were having problems) for you can't remember. Wow, great story with a really good ending!! Guest guest
Hi, I talked to my husband about everything we've been talking about and he told me that my mom has never liked him because he doesnt' let her control our lives. He has loved me since we were twelve and has always tried to hang the moon and stars for me. Actually, he said ever since the first moment he saw me threw a peep hole. I love him so much now, not just because of what he does, but mainly because he supports me so much and accepts me for me. When I look in the mirror now I think God what happened to me. How in the past few years have I become what I think of as a monster. But when I look in my husbands eyes I am so amazed that he doesn't see the ugliness. It's like he still sees me the way he did the first time he fell in love with me. He has a way of making me feel like I am the only beautiful woman in the world. He is the only person who does look at me. Most people look at my chair or at my body, but they don't look me in the eye. Even my mother does that. She and my aunts and uncles can't accept me like I am now. They say that they only want me not to give up, but I have asked them, what will you do if I don't walk again. What if the nerves in my spine don't regenerate. What if the brain cells I have lost dont' one day come back? Will you still love me. Will you accept me and still be proud of me? Everyone just says, we don't want you to give up trying. Is accepting myself as I am giving up. When neurosurgeons say that so much time has past that you probably won't regain control of your body, what do you do? I think I have given up, I just want to live and be happy with me. And I dont' understand how so many people can care about me so much, but won't come see me. They don't call me. They don't understand why I can't remember who everyone is. I say that maybe it's because I dont' know what everyone looks like. Maybe seeing people in my family will spark some kind of memory, if only a smell or glimps of one moment, just something to connect to. These are the reason that I wouldn't go anywhere at christmas. I didn't want to be in a room full of strangers and be ignored. Sometimes I feel like they thing I am contagious or something. I am so sorry for venting like this. I guess I needed it or it wouldn't all come out. My husband and brother inlaw told me tonight that my family has never liked them and they aren't sure why, but I don't let anyone put them down. And you are right, even if there were any problems they are gone now. I wrote my husband a poem for our anniversary this year that I will have to post for everyone who experiences the memory loss. I will close now, sorry I have taken up so much time. Good luck to all, Debbi

NO MATTER WHAT I SAID, I MADE IT WORSE. TODAY WHILE I WAS GETTING COFFEE, THE OLD CUSTOMER WAS WALKING BY AND SAW ME. SHE CAME IN TO SAY HI AND JUST AS SHE WAS STANDING THERE, THE GUY AT THE COUNTER ASKED IF I WANTED HIM TO SPREAD THE CREAM CHEESE ON THE BAGEL FOR ME, BUT WHEN I ANSWERED I SAID, " I'D LOVE IT IF YOU WOULD SPREAD THE CREAM CHEESE ON ME". Guest guest
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD KEEPER!! THANK YOU!!!!! MARCY (no subject) Don't Mess with Mom My son came home from school one day, with a smirk upon his face. He decided he was smart enough, to put me in my place. "Guess what I learned in Civics Two, that's taught by Mr..? It's all about the laws today, The "Children's Bill of Rights." It says I need not to clean my room, don't have to cut my hair. No one can tell me what to think, or speak, or what to wear. I have freedom from religion, and regardless what you say, I don't have to bow my head, and I sure don't have to pray. I can wear earrings if I want, and pierce my tongue & nose. I can read & watch just what I like, and get tattoos from head to toe. And if you ever spank me, I'll charge you with a crime. I'll back up all my charges, with the marks on my behind. Don't you ever touch me, my body's only for my use, not for your hugs and kisses, that's just more child abuse. Don't preach about your morals, like your Mama did to you. That's nothing more than mind control, And it's illegal too! Mom, I have these children's rights, so you can't influence me, or I'll call Children's Services Division, better known as C.S.D. Of course my first instinct was To toss him out the door. But the chance to teach him a lesson made me think a little more. I mulled it over carefully, I couldn't let this go. A smile crept upon my face, he's messing with a pro. The next day I took him shopping at the local Goodwill Store. I told him, "Pick out all you want, there's shirts & pants galore. I've called and checked with C.S.D. who said they didn't care if I bought you K-Mart shoes instead of those Nike Airs. And I've canceled that appointment to take your driver's test. The C.S.D. is unconcerned so I'll decide what's best. I said "No time to stop and eat, or pick up stuff to munch. And tomorrow you can start to learn to make your own sack lunch. Just save the raging appetite, and wait till dinner time. We're having liver and onions, a favorite dish of mine. He asked "Can I please rent a movie, to watch on my VCR?" "Sorry, but I sold your TV, for new tires on my car. I also rented out your room, you'll take the couch instead. The C.S.D. requires just a roof over your head. Your clothing won't be trendy now, and I'll choose what we eat. That allowance that you used to get, will buy me something neat. I'm selling off your jet ski, dirt-bike & roller blades. Check out the "Parents Bill of Rights," It's in effect today! Hey hot shot, are you crying, and why are you on your knees? Are you asking God to help you out, instead of C.S.D..? Guest guest
TONI YOU HAVE MY PRAYERS GIRL. I HAVE BEEN THERE NOT QUITE THAT BAD THOU. ITS HARD AND VERY DEPRESSING TO SAY THE LEAST. I'M NOT SURE SOMETIMES IF WE WEREN'T LIVING WITH WAYNE AND WE HAD RENT AND UTILITIES IF WE WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE IT. THE WAY IT IS NOW I AM ABLE TO HELP MY DAUGHTER OUT SOME. I KNOW IT MUST BE REALLY HARD ON DALE AS HE FEELS HE SHOULD BE THE BREAD WINNER AND BE ABLE TO CARE FOR YOU AND THE KIDS. YOU 2 HANG IN THERE AND DO THE BEST YOU CAN THINGS WILL WORK OUT SOMEHOW. LUV JO Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â http://community.webtv.net/jowaca/JOSFAVORITEPICTURES HI ALL, I HAVE TO MAKE THIS QUICK, I DON'T WANT DALE TO KNOW THAT I, AM, TELLING YOU GUYS ABOUT OUR PROBLEMS. I REALLY SHOULDN'T WHEN OTHERS HAVE SO MUCH GOING ON, BUT I KNOW YOU ARE HERE FOR ME. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ANYMORE. I JUST GAVE DALE THE LAST OF MY JEWELRY TO TAKE TO THE PAWN SHOP. HE WAS GOING TO TAKE HIS GOLF CLUBS, BUT COULDN'T FIND THEM IN TIME TO GET THERE BEFORE THEY CLOSED. HE IS TAKING THEM TOMORROW. I FEEL LIKE GOING TO BED AND PULLING THE COVERS OVER MY HEAD AND NOT COMING OUT OF MY ROOM FOR A VERY LONG TIME. I WANT TO CRY, BUT THAT DOES NOTHING TO HELP. WE NEED TO GET MEDS. AND HAVE NO MONEY TO GET THEM WITH. THE LITTLE MONEY HE WILL GET FOR MY STUFF WILL NOT BE ENOUGH. HE JUST CALLED AND LEFT A MESSAGE. THEY ARE ONLY GIVING HIM $75.00 FOR MY THINGS. I WONDER HOW MUCH HE WILL GET FOR HIS CLUBS? ROBIN AND JOY GAVE ME MONEY ON WEDNESDAY TO BUY DISH AND LAUNDRY SOAP. WE HAD BEEN OUT FOR A COUPLE WEEKS. ROBIN AND I ARE TALKING ABOUT MY FAMILY AND HERS RENTING A PLACE TOGETHER, TO HELP US GET BACK ON OUR FEET. DALE THINKS HE HAS WORK FOR THE WEEKEND, WHICH IS GREAT, EXCEPT I HAVE TO BE SOMEWHERE, AT THE SAME TIME OF MORNING, IN THE OTHER END OF TOWN. I ALSO WILL BE DONE 2 HOURS BEFORE HIM, AND THE BUSES DON'T RUN WHERE I WILL BE AT, ON THE WEEKENDS. ALSO, WE ARE OUT OF FOOD STAMPS UNTIL THE 4TH, WHICH IS A HOLIDAY, SO NOT SURE IF WE GET THEM THE DAY BEFORE OR AFTER. SO, IF YOU HAVEN'T GUESSED ALREADY, I'M A LITTLE DOWN. I FEEL LIKE SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS. THANKS ALL FOR LISTENING. I KEEP HEARING THAT IT WILL GET BETTER AND I KNOW IT WILL, BUT THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR FAR TO LONG. AT LEAST A YEAR AND A HALF, TO, TWO YEARS OF HIM HAVING A COMMISSION CHECK, ONE EVERY COUPLE MONTHS, BUT NOW, IT'S BEEN ONLY ONE FOR THIS YEAR. I HAVE TO GET GOING. HE WILL BE HOME ANY TIME. I NEED TO ASK FOR YOUR PRAYERS, IF YOU DON'T MIND. THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT. TONI COFFEEBABE
Guest guest
TONI I WOULD FEEL LIKE CRYING TOO. JUST DON'T STAY THERE TOO LONG AND HONEY I THINK YOU SHOULD LOOK INTO GETTING SOME HELP EVEN IF DALE DOESN'T WANT TO. IT'S TOO HARD ON YOU STRESS WISE NOT TO MENTION ALL THE OTHER WAYS. IS THERE ANY OTHER TYPE OF WORK HE COULD LOOK INTO. LIVING ON COMMISSION IS PRETTY ROUGH - I HAVE DONE THAT AND IF THERE'S NO DRAW AND NO BUSINESS ONE CAN GO HUNGRY. MAYBE HE COULD FIND SOMETHING MORE STEADY. IN THE MEANTIME, THOUGH PLEASE CHECK ON WHAT HELP IS AVAILABLE AND APPLY FOR IT CAUSE IT TAKES TIME TO GET IT GOING TOO. KNOW YOU AND YOURS ARE IN MY PRAYERS AND I SURE PRAY THIS TURNS AROUND FOR YOU SOON.
