First of all you should try writing down journal or find someone you trust talk to open about how you feel at the time before you start eat anything. Sometime it help to change mind what to eat or nothing. As yourself how you feel during the time and why. I still have some junk foods in my room. LOL but I do not eat them all at once as I used to before I have finally acknowledge my emotion issues from past. It will take time. I'm in the midst right now of targeting in on that issue and transforming it even more. I've put food back sometimes when I've had the energy and awareness to ask myself if I really want the food and the energy to do something else to care for myself. However, those times are few. Once the using food habit pattern has been triggered, I've found that it's easier to go with the worn path of least resistance and just eat. As Eliza indicated, this is a process and takes TIME, patience, and developing the ability to care for ourselves. Tribole and Resch's Intuitive Eating principle 7 - Honor Your Feelings Without using Food was a good starting point for me. After reading that chapter, I created a long list of things that I enjoy, that comfort me and distract me. I have had some success with directing myself toward things on that list when I see that I'm going toward food...like moving in some way...going for a walk, breathing deeply/meditating, doing a puzzle, etc. The drawback of that approach is that sometimes I am just tired or resistant to doing the things that I have on my list or when I'm feeling overwhelmed, I don't feel like I have the strength to move in any direction other than towards food, which is so easy and changes my internal state fairly quickly. Discovering my true physical hunger signals and the practice of honoring my hunger has also helped me gain so much more clarity and awareness about when I'm using food. I know when I'm hungry and I know when I'm using. I have also expanded my comfort eating repertoire. Instead of eating from the bag of doritos, for example, I have been able to put some chips on a small plate and taste each one of them and know that I'm doing it for comfort. So, I'm eating less per comfort session than in the past. Hirschmann and Munter, who wrote the book Overcoming Overeating also wrote When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies. Both books have been mentioned several times on this forum. I've just started reading the section in WWSHTB about " mouth hunger " . Their theory is that with more practice with what they call " demand feeding " or honoring your hunger, eventually you'll build up enough of a feeling sense of an internal caretaker that you'll be able to deal with your emotions without going toward food. We'll see. Figuring out what emotions and discomfort is driving you to use food is important. Even the types of food that you're using are clues. With that information you have better awareness about when you're using and can figure out the best ways to respond to your self and feel a sense of care, comfort, and peace. I'm seeing more and more the importance of DAILY relaxation and meditative self-care practices are going to be to help me keep or find a sense of internal peace and balance to decrease and eliminate my compulsion toward food. With IE, you get to eat and savor your very favorite foods and as much as you want of them. Nothing is off-limits. If you're hungry--emotionally or physically--for a particular food, go for it. And make sure you have plenty of it around so that you aren't worried you'll run out. According to Geneen Roth and others, that's the best way to come to terms with foods that have always been off-limits and therefore all the more enticing and powerful. Eventually, believe it or not(!), they lose their allure, and you'll find they don't have power over you. Eventually, when we learn to recognize our body's signals, we will realize that food is only food, not the answer to our deepest longings. But I think we have to go through the process. Just this week, I bought a couple of Milky Way candy bars. Yesterday as I ate one--thinking about it's chewy texture and taste--really entering into the experience, I realized it's a little TOO CHOCOLATEY for me. In a flash of insight, I decided not to buy them again, although they've been my favorite for years. I mean, why eat what I don't like?! I'd much rather have something else, like a doughnut. So that's what I plan to buy next. I'm definitely a sweets-eater, so I was amazed that what tempted me most today was a cup of ready-to-eat grapefruit. The sweet/tart combination was wonderful! Who knew this would happen without any effort on my part? It just happened to look good. Maybe my body was telling me I needed Vitamin C... Must confess I also ate the other Milky Way this afternoon. Maybe I had to verify I didn't like it? Yep, I still thought it was too chocolatey. But I couldn't bring myself to throw it away or keep it around indefinitely. Why is that? Guest guest Posted May 20, 2009 Report Share Posted May 20, 2009 Hi there, I'm no kind of authority, but I agree with the WWSHTB policy of having lots of food around, allowing yourself to eat it when you want to EVEN IF that means when you are not physically hungry, as long as you think about what your emotions are at the present time, why you want to eat, and what your feelings are with regard to the food. I have found that after doing this for a while, I am sometimes able to not eat when I am anxious, because I have the awareness that eating isn't going to help. I still feel guilty about eating when I'm not hungry, which means I still eat for emotional reasons. but a lot of things have changed for me. for example there is a huge, unopened bag of m & ms that has been sitting in my drawer for weeks now. I just recently moved and started school and I think the stress is what I am trying to deal with. I rented Yoga for Wimps because I could not find the Yoga for Dummies at the Library. I will see if that helps to calm me down and stop the bingeing. I need to learn more about the Intuitive Eating. Is there a book about it. I have never heard of this type of technique. It may be just what I need because nothing else seems to work.
