Ok, here goes:

Back at school, at the dormitories, I was known for making 'Dulce de

Leche' out of condensed milk tins. Dulce de leche is a south american

sweet thing, similar to butterscotch in flavour, to melted toffee in

consistency.

Anyways, I found out that by boiling condensed milk (the kind that

comes in a tin) in water for several hours, you get this dulce de

leche like thing.

One night I started this going, in the communal kitchen, and went to

sleep, setting a clock for 2 hours later to refill the water in the

pot.

*much* later on, I woke up in alarm (but not from the alarm

*clock*...).

Ran to the kitchen... which was SPLATTERED ALL OVER WITH DULCE DE

LECHE!

The water had run out, the tin had exploded... I cannot describe how

that kitchen looked!

I will never live that one down. Years later, my fellow students, now

fellow vets, still talk about how they woke up the following morning

and found me scrubbing the walls and ceiling down. I was optimistic

and thought I could clean it up. As it turned out, the kitchen had to

be totally repainted, out of my pocket of course :).

I was lucky then that nobody was in the kitchen when the tin exploded,

that could have been dangerous. Of course, if someone had been awake

they might have noticed the water had run out!

:)
