Not that I know of with the autoimmune disease itself. BUT with the use of immune suppressing drugs to treat the autoimmune disease (pred, etc) we are more susceptible to HPV as well as just about everything else.

HPV question

I saw my gyn today for a repeat Pap; 2 of my last 3 have been Class II. He said that if this one is Class II, he will send it on for High Risk HPV testing. I know that's Human Pappiloma(sp) Virus, & I know that if it's pos that means I have a higher risk of cervical cancer. I'm not worried - just wondering if anyone knows if we're more likely to have HPV with the autoimmune diseases.

Thanks,

Kathy,

That's what I sort of expected you to say. I'm on pred, remicade, & 6-MP; so I probably don't even have an immune system. At least my GI doc says I'm well-nourished (probably for the first time ever?).

Thanks,

Well, that's something, anyway.

My migraine finally went away yesterday--I woke up without it. But my eyes aren't focusing together right so I'm trying to decide between my opthalmalogist and my regular Doc. Guess I'll call and see what they say.

HPV is an STD. No one group of people, based on health alone, is more likely to get it. It is the most common STD(some estimates say we'll all have it by, can incubate in the body for a long time, often not showing any signs of having it. HPV, when it is active, causes genital warts. HPV does put women in a higher risk category for cervical cancer, but it is NOT a given. I tested positive at one point for HPV and during my first pregnancy had a cystoscopy which showed a small lesion on my cervix; they decided not to remove it b/c of possible pregnancy complications; to wait and see. I have had only one abnormal pap in the past ten years.

I can attest to that - I HATE PREDNISONE ! ! !

I've just been diagnosed as diabetic because of the prednisone. Now it's down another dark autoimmune alley for me on top of the Crohn's and it's all because of the prednisone.

On top of that my cholesterol is way over the top and I have 6 weeks to get that under control before my doctor forces me to go onto medication for that (I'm already taking too much medication in my opinion so I've asked for 6 weeks of total vegetarian diet to try to get it back to okay before I take any medication for it). As well my stationary blood pressure was 160 / 100 and I've never had blood pressure problems in my life before.

As well my thyroid function is down so now I have to up the thyroxin as well.

I've had doctors and especially prednisone. I would love to give it up but it would mean that I just sit in a chair all day in agony from the arthritis. The future looks grim.

I'm sorry to be so negative. I just feel destroyed at the present.

(((Hugs)))

Oh, you've had the craps, LOL. I think you meant crabs, LOL.

Std's are so common these days that it really isn't a big deal, most of the time just a PITA.

Christy--it's harder the older you are. When I was a kid it was a big secret and no one knew anyone that had VD, LOL. Hmmmm....some where along the line my generation managed to really get the ball rolling and now virtually everyone has or has had some kind of STD.

My one friend has herpes and she was so embarassed when she told me--years after she got it. Maybe it's being a nurse and knowing the frequency, but to me it's no big deal. Half the time you can pinpoint exactly where and when you got it.

I know so many people that got something from their first boyfriend, or from a rape, etc.
