Medicaid will not pay for braces. NSU has a special needs pediatric dental practice that accepts medicaid. I had to have my child's teeth pulled at Joe Di outpatient (she was sedated) and it was all paid for by Medicaid as is the dental cleanings etc at Nova. The braces are about 1/2 the cost of other orthodontists and they are very skilled with our special children. It helps to have things that can keep your child calm though because they do have to sit in a chair. I started years ago with her at the dentist's office -first in my lap, then me on top of her, then next to her and "new" toys that she would get when she stayed still, then stickers, now with the braces etc - she's a pro and picks out the color she wants for rubber bands. She is even

handling a tongue crib which prevents the tongue from staying b/t the teeth at one side which impairs tooth eruption. She's better at flossing etc than most typical kids - thank goodness for a previous sitter who had braces. There is a waiting list. The number is for the orthodontic dept. They have screenings before hand, but it was easier starting with the dental dept for cleanings etc for us to get in and that took 6 mths of waiting to get in. Good luck.

Does anyone know of an orthodontist in Broward that accepts Medicaid and works with our kids? Miki needs braces and her dentist says she'll have to sit still for an hour. I need someone that won't freak if she can't or uses gas so she can. It's either that or we need to pull teeth.

Jayne, Mikismom
