and I are not opposed to humane and proven treatments. We are just opposed to the suggestion that we are not good enough and should be cured or prevented from being born. So far there is no conclusive genetic test but if there is, will it be able to tell what sort of Autism a child might exhibit, or will they just recommend abortion if ANY Autism genes are present? That is what concerns us. Autism Speaks spends a lot of money on their own staff's salaries, but very little on actually helping Autistic people, while boldly stating that they will eradicate us if they can. We are aware that not all of our brethren are capable of speaking for themselves, but let US within the Autism Community do it, not a bunch of people who have no clue what Autism feels like from the inside looking out. That's all.

I, too, do not believe that anyone with autism can be " recovered, " or " cured, " but not for the same reason.  For me, it's the absolutes implicit in those words that make me uncomfortable.

 

But I need to address something you say below, and is kind of a recurrent theme in your postings:  Our ASD children are all in different places on the autism spectrum.  Very few are as high-functioning as you are.  Many will not live " happy, fulfilling " lives the way they are.  Many will not live " happy, fulfilling lives " unless they are cared for, unless they are taught to communicate, unless destructive and self-destructive behaviors are addressed. 

 

, you cannot compare many if not most of our children to yourself.  Without behavior training, therapies, possibly chemical intervention and biological intervention, their qualify of life will suffer.  Autism is not something they're proud of, it's something that's hindering their progress through life.  At the Asperger level, yes I can understand being proud of whatever makes you, you, including autism.  But what of all those kids whose functioning level is far far below Aspergers...the ones who don't talk and are self-injurious, for example?  They too are on the autism spectrum, and a recovery would be a marvelous miracle.

 

I don't want to start a long discussion out of this, that's not the purpose of the listserv, but I wanted to make sure that the above is clearly understood.

Autistics who live happy, fulfilling lives -- as autistic people -- are not. Many of us are even proud of our " autism " (and isn't that a reification mess?).

Hi!!! Could anybody please tell me , if there is a DAN doctor in the Miami Area.I have been buying tests by myself since my daughter´s primary doctor told me that   " recovered autistics are just rumors " .

I need to know if Medicaid-waiver covers any of those tests.My daughter is 25 years old, but you know.....I have to keep trying!.Sometimes I don´t know who is more autistic , my daughter or me!!Sequenzia, you  were so helpful and kind to me  when my daughter was at Kensington Park Elementary....a Long, long time ago.
