I am so glad someone responded to that article! I was so bothered by it and the flaws of the study. Of course, I have no time to cite all the research but here are my findings in lay person's terms:

The article/research study indicated the diets are "dangerous" as they are "restrictive": In what way are they "dangerous"? I suppose restricting my child's access to foods that cause him eczema must be a problem for them. I suppose restricting his access to foods that are neon orange, have food dyes, msg, things I cannot pronounce or identify and a myriad of other chemicals that make up the "food" item is a bad and dangerous thing.?? The "study" did not indicate (for those that were studied) that once the children stop eating those foods which cause them harm, they very, very often begin to eat a more varied diet to include more fruits and a plethora of vegetables and obtain whatever nutrients (assuming their issue is with the calcium) from various other sources. We can derive calcium from many other foods other than milk. Research indicates that we humans should not be drinking cow's milk anyway as most of us have difficulties processing not only the casein but the lactaid and cow's milk was only supposed to be SUBSTITUTED for when the mom's breastmilk was not sufficient. Not for regular daily consumption as is now touted. The other diets mostly restrict processed foods, simple carbohydrates; how is this dangerous? Seems to me that someone (from the study perhaps?) prefers the current American diet of processed foods, fast foods, chemicals, etc. Gluten is a relatively newer part of foods. In the past, it was a glue substance to splatter onto walls and hang wallpaper with. I wonder how that sits in our bellies.???

Secondly, I have such issue with all of the symptoms of autism being written off as just symptoms of the autism with no medical basis. The study indicated our kids eat the same foods over and over due to their rigidity and need for sameness, ocd, all relating to their autism and not a valid medical condition. If this is true, then why is it that when I fed my son pizza with all the fun gluten and casein, he could sit and eat 4 huge slices and could not shove it in his mouth fast enough, like a crack addict? I continue to feed him pizza, but the gluten and casein free type and he very appropriately eats only one piece and seems satisfied. The same is true for chicken nuggets. If the theory of restrictive eating is true, he would continue to eat as he did prior b/c it would not be about the ingredients of the pizza and chicken nuggets but about the pizza and chicken nuggets themselves. Moreover, just to use my son as an example, his eating has changed substantially since 'dangerously' restricting his access to gluten/casein. He is eating vegetables at both lunch and dinner and different fruits. And just to be sure I am not placing him at risk of a calcium deficiency, he gets calcium from other sources, including supplements.

I have other issues with this study but need to go make sure my son eats his carrots!
