Guest guest
I am sooo with you!! I have 4 kids (currently age 13,6,4, 4), work full time (7-2:30), working on my PhD part-time, and afternoons can get pretty crazy Some things I/we (my husband is the fancy cook, I'm the plain cook do -- Try to cook 2-3 dishes on the weekend. Usually that translates into something roasted and something in the crockpot, and maybe a casserole, lasagna or chili. For instance, this weekend he made a meatloaf in the oven and giant beef stew in the crockpot (with a ton of veggies!). Then during the week, all I have to do to feed the kids a healthy meal is make the sides (frozen veggie or salad, and a starch- noodles, rice, or instant mash potatoes). Wednesday night is 'kid food' night - fish sticks, mac cheese, pigs in blankets, or their current favorite, sweet and sour meatballs - super easy, just toss in a bag of frozen meatballs, a bottle of chili sauce and a small jar of grape jelly - sounds bizarre but is REALLY quite good! ... all quick to prepare... Thursday night is leftover night, and Friday night is pizza night - sometimes home-made mini-pizzas, sometimes a DiGiornos, and Papa s for a treat every so often... For my IE eating, I try to keep the house stocked with the things I enjoy, and if I'm really having a craving for something unusual I can leave work 5 minutes early and zip into the store on the way home - or go out for it once hubby gets home. Sometimes I do my own thing, sometimes I eat with the family... having food made ahead of time makes it easy to be flexible. Also, we/he try to cook large batches on the weekend and freeze some - that opens up more options that don't take any time as well! As far as needing time to analyze IF you are truly hungry and WHAT you want to eat - I've gotten in a routine with my kids, I get home at 3 and although the babysitter has already given them a snack, it's like I'm not officially home until I've made everyone some ovaltine LOL. Then I tell them to run off and play because it's Mom's Turn for a snack (which could be anything from cheese and crackers to a big salad to a bowl of soup), and any requests will just have to wait until I'm done. Then around 4:00 we settle down into homework (at the kitchen table, so I can start pulling out stuff for dinner while still being available for assistance). As an aside- my 6 year old son LOVES to bake - sometimes with his older sister, sometimes with me, sometime with the very special 'help' of 2 4 year olds LOL. Thank goodness I found IE before he got into baking, as I never would have been able to resist those delicious and forbidden cakes, cookies, and brownies that we make!! Instead, I thoroughly enjoy our afternoons spent baking together and I never binge on the batter or finished product the way I would have even 6 months ago. Sometimes I have just a taste so I can praise his skills, sometimes I have a big slice, sometimes we fight over who gets to lick the spoon, and it's all good hope this gives you some ideas -- I know my afternoon eating was a mess before I found IE because when I was " dieting " I was trying to deal with the kid-chaos HUNGRY, which made me irritable, which made me impatient with them, which made me feel guilty, which made me eat!! It's so much nicer now! Mikki This, I see now, came naturally when I was single with no kids. Back then:1. I didn't have the guilt for not providing meals that my kids need to grow and be healthy. 2. I had the TIME in solitude to examine my state of hunger, survey my mind and palate, and decide what it was I really was craving. NOW, I have to prepare a meal for four, all the while helping kids with homework, and settling loud disputes. I need time to analyze! 3. I had the freedom to leave on a whim to go purchase a bag of carrots if that's what I was craving.I've decided to stock up on my favorite T.V. Dinners... This way it will be served to me quickly, and I'll have easy choices to make. Any other ideas out there? Guest guest
The trick is that you still have those options of choices. The challenge becomes finding ways to incorporate these into your more 'enriched' life. The first step is permission to do so ;-) ehugs, Katcha IEing since March 2007 > > This, I see now, came naturally when I was single with no kids. Back then: > > 1. Guest guest
That is wonderful Deb. To be honest those RD usual are wrong on one thing. Because each individual body has different way to response with foods in different time. Sometimes it is okay to have same time eating with someone partner. Otherwise follow what your body hungry for. For myself, it is depend every morning. Sometimes I eat early as 8 am or late as 11 am depend on when I feel my stomach light growl. I am glad you have figure it out usual the time is right for you to eat when your body is at least hungry. Eliza > > I'm in a posting mood. > > Yesterday I listened to my body! And when I paid attention, it actually told me when it was hungry! > > I have fought back and forth with my dietician about when to eat breakfast. For some reason, I do not like to eat early. I am usually not hungry until at least 10am. The RD insists that if I eat earlier and then eat a bigger lunch, I'm less likely to binge later. > > Well guess what? Yesterday I ate breakfast at 10:30. Then I made a really bold move and although I have been taking a 12-1 lunch, I decided not to eat because I wasnt hungry! Go figure!!! Then I packed a lunch to bring back to work and ate it around 2 when I my body told me it was hungry. > > It felt right. > > Deb >
Guest guest
DEB ~ Good for you. Just goes to show that nobody can tell us what our body really needs...only our bodies themselves. Thanks for sharing that. > > I'm in a posting mood. > > Yesterday I listened to my body! Guest guest
Yes, Deb, that sounds about right. If you're not hungry, why eat? Unless of course you absolutely cannot eat when you ARE hungry later on. In that case, you'd have to know your body pretty well and realize you need to eat a little something so you don't get sick later on. I do that when I'm actually thinking.
