The Grottoes of North America Dental Care for Children with Special Needs covers children under the age of 18 with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and muscular dystrophy. There isn't a specific category for autism, however, they used to cover them under the mental retardation category.Maybe they still do-I'm not sure. I suppose if your child has a cogntive delay in addition to the autism, they may cover them. If your child has Medicaid, they will not cover them. If you have other dental insurance, they will act as the secondary insurance.

Parents, fill out this form:

The dentist fills out this form: This is the pre-authorization form. Of course, you must first find out if your dental provider takes Grotto Insurance just like you would any other insurance

The Ft Lauderdale contact is Malcolm Black who I have known for years. A very nice and helpful man. You can call him to get started at

Back in the day, I took my son, Blake to Dr Trupkin at Pediatric Dentistry in Plantation. . They took the Grotto. Once Blake was an adolescent, they couldn't handle him anymore, so they referred me to Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. They have a wonderful dental clinic for individuals with special needs of all ages. I recommend Dr Diane Nichols. She isn't just a dentist, but an individual that is dedicated to improving the lives of those with special needs in many ways. You can reach Nova at .

This is the Mason's group I provided the address for in a previous post. Autism is one of the 'approved' conditions. My two youngest sons, who have moderate and severe ASD, have been helped by them for the past four years.

Thanks and Sara - i spoke with Macolm this morning. In addition to

filling out the registration form I need to get a letter from my pediatrician

verifying my son's diagnosis and 'mental age' (a field on the form).

I have also found Dr. Bazos in plantation and have a consultation with him later

this month - I will let the group know how it goes. He is in network with Cigna

PPO and has worked in partnership quite a bit with Grottoes.

Thanks to everyone who responded and I look forward to sharing my journey.
