Dr. Palencia-Kerr will be the guest speaker who will be discussing the Nueropsychology of Autism. Divine Academy's open houses are open to the entire community. I've been saying for a long time that traditional education does little or nothing to prepare kids for independent living... many of the things they would have learned from their parents get lost in the shuffle with two working parents and kids who go from daycare through the school system and then are suddenly at the age of majority just expected to somehow " know " everything they need to be capable and successful in life. Honestly it's too bad that it takes a private school to " get " this. ALL kids need to learn how to balance a checkbook, do laundry without ruining it, cook without burning the house down, etc. there is so much more to education than " the basics " . I insist my kids learn how to do most things (they are capable of) from as early an age as possible... it's amazing how many people do it all for them... then they learn no responsibility. The most useful thing I feel they all should know is how to find out anything else they want to know... because once they have the ability to research and look it up they're halfway there. </soapbox>In re-reading this, I wonder just how many of the skills I mentioned ARE part of the school's curriculum.
