Dear COPAA Members and Colleagues –

APRAIS, The Alliance to Prevent Restraint, Aversive Interventions, and Seclusion, is a coalition of 17 national disability advocacy organizations and COPAA is a member. APRAIS is conducting a survey of parents and guardians to establish the extent to which restraint, seclusion, and aversive procedures have been used with students with disabilities and special needs (whe the r served under IDEA or under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act) in public or private schools or in residential facilities. The data ga the red in the survey will be used to publish a research article. Please note: If you or one of your clients has completed any previous questionnaires on this topic or provided o the r information, the information reported will not be included as a part of the se results.

Individuals must complete this survey for responses to be included.The survey will be available for completion until October 12th, 2009. Approximately five to ten minutes are required to complete the survey. You will find a link to the survey at the bottom of this email.Definitions: For the purpose of this survey, the following definitions are used:• Restraint: The use of physical procedures by one or more individuals or mechanical devices in order to limit freedom of movement. Example: Holding an individual in an immobile position for a period of time.• Seclusion: Placement in an isolated area for an extended period of time and prevention from leaving the area. Example: Placing an
