Guest guest
I toured 4 high schools this summer. City and Flanagan were the best of the four. City is not taking any students because it is at capacity, unless you live in the area. My son is now at Flanagan and all seems well so far. Not sure where you live, but you may want to take a look at Flanagan. Good Luck!Subject: RE: High School RecommendationTo: sList Date: Monday, September 21, 2009, 2:36 PMGood Afternoon:I am hoping that someone can suggest a High School in the South Broward area that has a great ESE program. My son is 15 and is High Functioning. The Middle School he was attending in Miramar was horrible. I found a good private school, but as you know it is very expensive even with the Mckay Scholarship. This is his first year of High School, and everyday he asks me when can he return to public school so he can have a "real high school experience". I am weary of sending him back unless I can find a High School with a great ESE program. If anyone has any suggestions, I will greatly appreciate it.Thank You------------------------------------
Guest guest
To jlewin01, Our son went to City High with High Functioning Autism (Aspergers) and was successful academically and challenged successfully socially. He participated in Key Club, drama department including acting in shows, Best Buddies as a buddy freshman year with a male senior and female sophomore as his mentors to help with the transition to high school. By senior year he was the mentor for a male freshman. We attribute some of his success to the support system we had in place like ESE Facilitator Jill Beer, Dr. the 9th grade advisor, Mrs. Leobowitz the ESE Family Counselor who had followed him from Pioneer, Mrs. Dermer the senior advisor who coordinated/supported his efforts to get ready for college with vocational rehab. evaluation and follow-up. My husband and I attended his IEP with him (required in the upper grades). Most teachers cooperated with his IEP. He had accomodations for extended time for tests as needed in the media center including SAT and ACT. He had preferencial sitting in the classroom. High school life was not perfect as is life. He had problems with group projects and he had to use his resources to complete the work. Survival skills were a big focus of his senior year. He had to advocate for himself as he is now a freshman at UCF. I wish you much luck. Start with a tour of the school. It is a big campus and very spread out. Your child will need to navigate the busy hallways between classes and lunch time can be a particular challenge for our kids.
