Guest guest
I have a five year old daughter with autism and apraxia. She has 10 words which are highly prompted and lots of sounds. As many of you have experienced, she has passed one behavior or tic for another...flapping hands, rubbing face, shaking face, etc. However this new tic is absolutely God awful. My daughter screams involuntarily all day long until bedtime. She lifts her hand to her mouth and screams...not happy, not sad, just screams in a very matter of fact way. However, it is tearing our house apart with the screaming. All of our therapists agree it's a tic....one thought possible seizures but the neurologist says its a tic. He prescribed Risperdol. I looked through all the old messages on that. It seems that some of your children developed tics from the meds...is that so? My hope is to lose this screaming tic and calm her down, with the possible side effect of weight gain. Not gain something worse. I would like to have some feedback as I need to help her and stop the constant screaming. Thanks Friends.
Guest guest
My son takes a very low dose of risperdal (.5 mg - breakfast and .5 mg at bedtime) and has taken it for about 5 years. He didn't develop any tics from it. He also takes Stavzor for possible seizures without any tics (This rarely is covered by insurance companies and is expensive - Depakote is almost the same). Guest guest
My son not only gained weight on risperdal, he gained hypercholesterolemia, and became prediabetic. Some become fully diabetic. You can also get tardive dyskinesia, a disorder of involuntary movements > I have a five year old daughter with autism and apraxia. Guest guest
In reading your post, some things stood out for me. I apoligize I have no information regarding the tics except that they do pass and move on to another at some point. Number 1, administering Risperdal to a 5 year old concerns me greatly. There is some really good research on apraxia and abnormal eeg and/or seizure activity in the brain. Several double blind placebo studies were conducted to determine if those children either with apraxia and/or seizure activity and/or just abnormal eeg activity would benefit from a supplement called L-Carnosine. I wish I could just attach the study but once I read something I rarely print or keep. Sorry. But you can google it and check out the research. The kids who were in the L-Carnosine study benefitted significantly as the supplement targeted the abnormal activity and thereby speech increased. Another intervention is Verbal Behavior. I strongly suggest you get trained in Verbal Behavior and have everyone involved with your daughter trained in VB. If you need, I can provide some resources. As for the tics, I don't have any help there. So sorry!!!! From: Sent: Thursday, October 01, 2009 1:18 PM To: sList Subject: Risperdal I have a five year old daughter with autism and apraxia. Guest guest
Of course, I don't have to tell you to always check with your doctor first.... Guest guest
I would take my child to a Dan doctor and detox her system. Guest guest
To Austintand,I am interested in the resouces/information you can provide on verbal behavior to train mysrelf. Guest guest
My 7-year-old has been on Risperdal for almost a year and it has been very helpful for him. Our neurologist did say (as another poster here did) that he should not be on it too long term. But as I said, it did stop some of his aggressive behaviors and he is much less anxious and much happier. Good luck! Jen > > Does anyone have any comments on the use of Risperdal on a 5 year old > autistic boy with some anger/anxiety issues? Guest guest
Hi I started having panic attacks when I stopped smoking. After 10 years the attacks went from one a month to one a day and some lasting hours. The Dr tried to put me on an SRRI but I am one of those people who has sever side affects rash, burning sensation sever insomnia ect. To get me to tolerate the SSRI side effects till they went away the Drs put me on Risperdale. I am 5'8 " and weigh over 200 pounds. I was given .5mg a day for a month and then .25 mg for another month. In my research on risperdale i read many reviews from adult Aspies that LOVED the drug. Which once I was on the drug I knew why. Risperdale made me felt like I was stoned. I had a pleasant buzz all day. I did not care about the ssri side effects because I was happy happy happy. Life felt GOOOD. I would of fit in at a Dead concert no problem. After being on risperdale I truly believe it would be sold on the street as a pill for of weed if it wasn't for that pesky side effect of making breast tissue grow and causing some people to lactate. I understand why they give it to aggresive kids as risperdale keeps you stoned enough that violence is the last thing on your mind. I swear someone could of shot me and I would been fine with that when I was on Risperdal . My Dr said I was the only patient he had that described risperdale's effects as being stoned. My thought at the time was " yay whose Going to tell the Dr they want off a drug that is as good as weed but legal' Then again I am that 1% of the population who always gets side effects from drugs. I have a sensitive system > > Does anyone have any comments on the use of Risperdal on a 5 year old > autistic boy with some anger/anxiety issues?
