Guest guest
Hi, I was a clencher before the surgery and I'm still a clencher now, just not to the same extent and I'm not in as much pain. I wasn't really expecting this surgery to help out with the clenching since I'm not really sure that's related to the overbite (it may certainly make things worse though). I'm getting fitted for a night guard after my braces come off that should help out with the clenching. Both my ortho and my surgeon told me that I would need to have one and I should've been put in one sooner, but since I have the braces, a night guard wouldn't really be as effective. This is an avenue you may want to bring up with your team. Guest guest
Hi new gurl, I know what you mean. I began to realize a few weeks after my surgery that I had gotten myself in to much more than I had ever expected. I wish I had asked a lot more questions too. I had two surgeries: first a rapid palatal expansion, then upper and lower a few months later. The rapid palatal expansion was a walk in the park compared to upper/lower surgery. My surgeon repeatedly told me the second surgery would only be slightly worse... I'd have to say he was very, very wrong. Looking back, I probably would have called it quits after the first surgery and had my ortho correct my underbite as much as possible. Anyway, I can't turn back time. I don't think my result from surgery is a disaster, but I am still having some problems. My upper lip is my biggest concern. It still feels tight and it is weird trying to smile even at over four months post-op. At first my doctor said " Don't worry, it will loosen up 100%. " Then he said " It should still get back to 90% " . Now he's saying, " It might still improve some. " If you notice, he gets less and less optimistic all the time. So I guess I might be stuck with this tight upper lip. I'm kind of bummed, but there's no way I'd go through another surgery to correct the problem (if it can be corrected). I'm sorry to hear about all of your problems. You still have a lot of healing to do at only 2 months post-op. So there's a good chance that most of your problems will improve a lot. Hang in there. Thanks for sharing your story with me. - > > > what if you hadn't had your surgery yet...knowing what you know > > > now...would you go through with it?...be honest...my answer is > no > > > way! Guest guest
Hi, just to throw my two cents in, don't lose hope on the sensation coming back yet. My lower left jaw (the side I broke before) was just about completely numb from surgery (August 19, 2002) until around Thanksgiving. Small amounts of sensation were coming back, but I couldn't feel myself touch my own chin. Now I can and it's come back more in the past month or so than it had the previous 4 months. I still have high hopes for even more sensation coming back. Guest guest
Lenora, welcome!!!! Tuesday is so close. When I had mine, I was just anxious to get daily things done up so that I could rest afterwards, but the day after I was up and feeling good. Of course, that was lap surgery. Is yours open? I'm sure it's really tough with your husband away. Do you have help for when you get home? Help for yourself, and help for the girls? I was given the guideline to not life over 20# for 6 weeks. That's tough with little ones. Sending you best wishes, and looking forward to hearing from you when you get home. Guest guest
Nora, I too think maybe what you're feeling is head hunger. I had a lot at first, but it's very seldom now. And my inside's were making all kinds of noises too! I just had to be tough and not give in to what others were eating. Smells and visual drove me crazy..... " just one bite " ....but I know I wouldn't stop at one bite. It really does get easier. Guest guest
That is " head hunger " . Yes it is normal to feel that way. However you are going to have to learn to get over it. That is what got us in this situation to begin with. However the good news is that is does get better over time. Keep focused on why you had this surgery. In time as you lose weight your quality of life will begin to improve so much that thinking about what you can't eat will become a much smaller issue. Focus is the key. When you feel like this drink something or do something else that gives you pleasure. You can drink lots of things other than water. Crystal light, diet Snapple, juice (cut it in half with water), fruit 2 o, broth, sugar free popsicles, SF Kool-Aid (Grape flavor is my personal favorite). Gosh I know there are more but I can't think of them right now. Mix it up...with more variety you will get less bored and think less of other things. Let us know how we can help!!!
