Guest guest
Liz, my feet, ankle, and knees hurt a lot, and took an exercise class prior to surgery in which an Orthopedist talked to us (all pre-surgery), in which he told us that hardest on the body of morbid obese people was to be out jogging, and possibly extended walking. He said until we started losing weight to start a bike or exercise bike, or even just stretching with exercise bands. For me this was very true as I have bone spurs on the top of my foot from previous accident and surgery. I was walking 2 miles a day with a friend, and it was getting worse. A different Orthopedist told me to quit and start using the exercise bike. For me this was fine as I already had a great, expensive bike which had become a wonderful coat hanger. But they don't have to be real expensive. The only reason I had this one was I found it used. So I dusted it off, and after owning it for about 8 years, it's actually getting use! The bike doesn't hurt my feet at all, and without weight on the ankle it doesn't hurt. The knees....another story, but as I lose weight it's going away too. I'm sure others here have more ideas. Guest guest
Liz- I totally know what you mean. I found some exercise videos that are actually fun. You can find them on Bliss.com. She has a whole series of tapes for all levels of fitness. I own a bunch of them. My favorite is her sitting aerobics. She also has some muscle toning tapes that can be done lying on a bed. I have bad knees, so when I lie on the floor it's like.... " I've fallen and I can't get up! " :-). Shortness of breath is my current worst problem. One I hope to get rid of shortly after surgery. Best wishes to you. Jayne Lap RNY 3/12/
Guest guest
THANK YOU everyone for all of your ideas. I am going to look into swimming for sure, and I asked Hubby for a nice sturdy exercise bike too. I probably have to suck it up and get fitted for good sturdy ugly shoes - for now at least ;-) I LOVE THIS GROUP! ;-) Liz Pre-Op, No Date Yet Dr. Hess - Quincy/Boston, Mass. *** Liz *** Please Help Support the Quincy Animal Shelter by Shopping with IGive.com " Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away... " Re: Exercise Question... Liz, Try doing excersizes that you can do sitting in a chair using free weights maybe? any kind of movement that you can do will help out. I use to have alot of pain in my feet, legs and hips when I walked, to the point where I couldnt walk 5 feet without losing my breath or feeling like I would never make it to my destination. Today I dont have any of that pain and can walk for miles before I even get a little tired take care Ruth open RNY 10/29/02 386/186/165 MA Dr Bruce Thayer
