Guest guest
Hi Karey, I had upper jaw surgery in August. It is definitely survivable but not exactly a walk in the park. You've come to the right place for information. Read the old archives if you can. And check out Fiddlestick's excellent web site at http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ Have you consulted with an orthodontist yet? Braces are usually part of the package. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheryl
Guest guest
Hi Karey, & Welcome! Set up a meeting w/ the surgeon (or surgeons) that your ortho recommends (as soon as you can) then you will get a conplete idea of what they are proposing. There's lots of info on this site (and on the web) about the procedures all of us have had. Just get as much info as you can, that's what really helps. I had my upper jaw reduced somewhat & moved up (only 4mm) and for me the upper part of the surgery was a piece of cake... I had little swelling or congestion... but the lower surgery was more complicated in my case.. (I had BSSO, or Bi-Saggital Split Osteotomy). That means, the jaw is split and moved forward and held in place w/ plates & screws..sounds scary but it really is kind of neat. It's a pretty common procedure for people with extreme overbites or open bites...plus I had a procedure called genioplasty where my chin was advanced forward about 8mm. You can see my xrays under my photo album. I can't comment on the TMj cause I didn't have that but is common when the bite is off. See ya later, > Hi, > > I am new to the group, and have suffered from TMJ for several years. > My orthodontist now feels that I need to have my upper jaw moved down > and forward, as well as my chin a little forward. He said my jaw > bones may need to be shaved down as well. > > Has anyone else had this done? I am terrified!!!! I read so many > negative surgery stories, and I want to feel like this is safe.
