Guest guest
Hi, if you think your son is ready to be in an inclusive setting, you need to get that on his IEP before you move. His new school in Florida will, at least to begin with, put him in a mainstream classroom depending on the minutes on his IEP. To me there is a big difference between "Palm Beach" and "Jupiter". Most people would probably not associate Jupiter with Palm Beach. The city of Palm Beach is huge and has a lot to offer, whereas Jupiter is a realitively small place. I am sure Jupiter is a great place for kids, but you may not have as many options as you would in a larger place, that's all. Have you been to Jupiter? Do you have friends or family members there? Liz Subject: Off Topic: Moving to the area in JuneTo: sList Date: Saturday, September 5, 2009, 5:03 PM Hi everyone,My name is Cornell and I have a 6yo son with high-functioning autism and 7yo daughter with focus issues but otherwise typical. We are moving to the area of West Palm Beach in June. This winter we will begin searching for a new house. What area has the best schools for children on the ASD spectrum? Our son benefits greatly from an integrated clasroom, what schools are more openminded to this approach? We have been looking seriously at Jupiter, Florida. Does anyone on this list live in this area? Also, I am very involved with a biomed group in Delaware. It's a small group that we created out of necessity. Are there any TACA, NAA, or other biomed friendly groups in the area? Thanks in advance for the help and support. We are really looking forward to moving to you neck of the woods. I am ready to be done with muggy, buggy, Delaware! :-)
Guest guest
Hi , My daughter is PDDNOS/ASD and is in the 1st grade at Cypress Trails Elementary in Royal Palm Beach (Just North of Wellington). We have had an amazing experience at this school. I don’t know if it was just luck or things are just aligned in the right way but it has been a 180 from our experience in our old school. We moved here from Broward County (about an hour south) last year and were in the same place as you. Please feel free to contact me off line if you would like to know more about this area and the services. Guest guest
Hi : Good luck with your move, but Florida is 10x more muggy and buggy that Delaware! Especially if you'll be living near water : ) I agree with Lizzie; even though Jupiter is part of PB County, you will be able to receive more services if you moved further south. I used to live in Boynton Beach, which is about 35 minutes or so south of Jupiter. If we had stayed in Boynton, my daughter may have attended one of the new schools that has an ESE from K-5, that would be Sunset Palms. But the first step would be to call the Child Find office in Palm Beach county; they handle the evals and IEP's. I don't have the number handy, just go online and google palm beach county school district. There are also more options as far as therapies for both of your kids. If you need anymore help, please feel free to email me; it's tough navigating a new system. I'm doing it now! & > > Hi everyone, > > My name is Cornell and I have a 6yo son with high-functioning autism and 7yo daughter with focus issues but otherwise typical. Guest guest
Hi , Funnily enough we are also considering a move to S. Florida ( from Philly ) and have been looking at the area around Plantation which I believe is in Broward. Is there a big difference in services / therapies between Broward and Palm Beach ? We want to be within 2 or 3 hours from Melbourne so we can see Dr Rossignol as our Dan Doctor. Guest guest
Hi : Yes, Plantation is Broward and pretty centrally located. Here's my quick story. I've lived in Broward since I was 12 (I'm 44 now). Eight years ago, my husband and I left and moved to PB county. We had 2 children, one () with autism. She was able to receive therapies through the Early Steps program (Part C, which is the state) and when she turned 3, she was able to go into a public pre-school autistic program. She spent the 2008-2009 school year in a PB school. Ok...my girlfriend lives in Broward and has a son with Aspbergers. She was constantly letting me know the services available in Broward, especially a wonderful school called Baudhuin. It's a pre-school for autistic children, part of Nova University as well as an agent school for Broward (meaning it was free). We put our house up for sale, got into Baudhuin (thank goodness), and moved back to Broward. Whew....I find there is alot more participation and options in the autism community here in Broward. You can look up info on C.A.R.D. (Univ. of Miami/Nova Univ), Autism Society of America (Broward Chapter) and gather some more info that way. As you know, one thing leads to another, then another. Hope I helped a little. If you need any more info, I'd be happy to get if for you! Good luck... Guest guest
Hi everyone! Thanks for the great input about moving to your area. We are in the beginning stages and are just learning about the different areas. A few of my husbands future coworkers have recommended the Jupiter/Abacoa area but given all of your information I definitely want to expand my search. I will definitely be contacting a few of you offline to get more info. Thanks again!
