Guest guest
I have been taking an on-line MT course since October and am really enjoying it. One of my friends also took the same course and recently graduated. She wants to work at home so badly, as do I, and she has been applying at all the MT Companies she can find. She took the MedQuist test, but didn't do well enough on the dictation I guess. Anyway, they sent her a notice saying they don't hire anyone without 2 years experience. She took the RI test last week, and has not heard anything from them. She said the Dr. she transcribed sounded like he was eating a Big Mac in a wind tunnel! Ha Ha But, now we are afraid our on-line course did not teach us enough to actually pass any tests. We have nothing to base this on, but we just feel like we don't know as much as we should. Now the dilemma - We live 70 miles south of Rochester, MN and the Mayo Clinic has an MT class coming up. It is subsidized which is a huge drawing card to me! They pay $10.63 an hour to take the class and $12.42 for Post-Training. This includes books. But my fear is that after the class they will make it mandetory that you work for them for a certain amount of time. I understand this, but I can't imagine driving 70 miles one way to work every day. It would kill me. I drive 8 miles a day now, and in the winter that 8 miles can seem like 80! However, even $10.00 is more than I am making at my present retail job! They are having an informational meeting on Jan. 9th, so we are going to go to that and just check out the details. I want an at home job so badly, but I'm afraid if I try to get a job with the class I am taking now, I will end up in the same boat as my friend. I know none of you can help me, but I just needed to vent. Thanks.
Guest guest
, By all means check this out. This is such a good option for you. I don't know what to tell you though. They probably will require you to work for them for a certain period of time in order to pay for their time in training you. This might be a very short period of time in-house and then out of your home (remember this is a PERHAPS ONLY). It does not hurt to check this out. I know I could have done this job without the vocational school training I had as I was darn good at typing, had a strong medical background, etc. but I opted to go through " formal training " through a vocational school " just to have a piece of paper to say I could do the job. " Actually, that's not true, I went there to become a Medical Administrative Assistant -- which I could very well have done having been a CNA, home health aide, the whole 9 yards. I got sidetracked, I had been taking the transcription and computer portion of the program one course per semester because those courses did not have homework involved and I was working 2 jobs at the time. Well, at the end of the keyboarding and MT-type work, I still had school to go and was having significant withdrawal. I thus realized that this field covered my love of secretarial-type things and my love of medicine. Anyway, I don't know that I would have made it if I had not had the in-class time to bounce questions off of, etc. I think the Mayo program sounds wonderful for you. Please, please, please check this out. Have you checked out www.aamt.org Please check into AAMT -- this is a wonderful source for networking. I will send the contact info for your area to you privately. Also, has your friend gone through the phone book -- I know here in the Denver area there are smaller companies that sometimes will take the time to mentor you along. Also, AAMT has a mentoring program for student members of the association. This is all explained at their website.
