While I am glad that McCarthy is out there raising awareness, etc., and I empathize with her fight for her son... She in no way represents me or most other moms struggling with this life. She can afford to fly her child all over the country to seek out alternative healing, she can afford to have someone help her 24/7 with her son, she can afford to have care for him while she makes movies and tv shows, she can afford to have care for her son while she maintains a movie star's body, etc. McCarthy likes to tell people she is like all other autism moms. Does she struggle to get services or an appropriate education for her child? Does she have to figure out which bills to pay and which to let go deeper in to late fees so she can afford supplements for her kid? Does she sit up at night crying because she pays thousands of dollars every year to a health insurance company that does not cover anything for her child? She does NOT represent me and when she says she does, she does terrible disservice to the majority of our population who struggle just to get their hair brushed each day while caring for their children on the spectrum as well as the rest of their families. She paints a picture that makes people ask me (and I am not kidding here) "why can't you just cure your kid like did?" I am glad and her son have found healing and hope. I am glad she tells people it is possible. I just wish she'd stop telling people that all our kids are alike and that she is just like the rest of us and that we all just we just need to do what she did and they will be cured. Thanks for letting me put in my two cents, Chuan-Riley autism book A New Respect For McCarthy I am reviewing McCarthy's book "Mother Warriors" because I have a son diagnosed with an ASD(autism spectrum disorder). Her book is very well written, and very inspirational.I normally don't read much, and I usually take a really long time to finish a book. I received this book for Christmas, so I figured I would just read a few pages, to familiarize myself. Boy was I surprised!I read this book in 5 days! I could hardly put it down! And I often go back to it! Needless to say I loved this book! It really hit home with me, and opened my eyes to a whole new world of treatments, and other mother's stories.I cried, and I laughed, and I blurted out comments many times while I was reading it. I highly recommend reading it, even if you don't have a special needs child. McCarthy is the ultimate mother warrior! I would love to just hug her and thank her in person. She is the voice we have all been looking for.===

Guest guest
I have heard she does and that she contributes more to helping families and trying to educate people on biomedical interventions. The books are easy to read and the most recent one was a very simplified way to discuss the interventions she used for her son and it is written in a back and forth interview format with her son's doctor. I believe it helps to dispel some of the myths about biomedical. One think the most recent book states is that her son is not "cured" but she prefers to use the term "recovered." She likened his experience to an example of being hit by a truck. He will never be the same (i.e.. cured) but he can and did recover from the "accident." She also explained in the book that the term "recovered" means different things to different people. Her son is by no means typical as compared to his same age typical peers. However, for her, she felt his overall functioning or progress (cannot think of a good term to use) was significant enough for her. In the book, she indicated some parents considered their kids recovered just by sleeping through the night. So, they indicated it meant different things for different people. 's primary message is that there are a group of children who have been diagnosed with autism but that do not have autism but have a group of medical conditions mimicking autism. That is why biomedical interventions are effective for some individuals. If it is true autism, they would not work. That is the premise she and others who utilize biomedical go on.
