Eastern Daylight TimeSubj: Upcoming Talks, Future USA Autism Research Requests, Recruiting for new Autism/Vitamin D study Wholistic Pediatrics- Berger, MD, FAAP Future USA Autism Research Requests, Upcoming Talks, Recruiting for new Autism/Vitamin D study The Future of Autism Research in AmericaThe National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Interagency Autism Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) has issued an Request for Information in an effort to get feedback regarding the Strategic Plan for autism research that was developed last year as a requirement of the Combating Autism Act of 2006. The Act requires that the strategic plan be updated annually. The deadline for public comment is Friday, August 21st.The plan is divided up into 6 areas which are phrased as questions that parents would ask about autism.1. When should I be concerned?2. How can I understand what is happening?3. What caused this to happen and can it be prevented?4. Which treatments and interventions will help?5. Where can I turn for services?6. What does the future hold? Each of these question areas contain an aspirational goal along with research opportunities linked to short and long term research objectives. For each of these research questions we are seeking input with regard to a) relevant research topics that are missing or under representedb) new opportunities for advancing research and knowledge about ASDc) suggestions for prioritizing research objectives It is critical that they hear from people who are advocating biomedical therapies, to guide Federal funding to the most promising areas of research, especially with regard to treatment. So if you can, please take the time to review the plan and make recommendations about how it can be improved to help our children live healthy and productive lives. Vitamin D-Autism Prevention Study Wholistic Pediatrics has been asked to be a recruitment and participation site for a new study that is investigating a potential role of Vitamin D deficiency in the development of Autism. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with many chronic conditions including weakened immunity, autoimmune diseases, cancer, diabetes, and declining cognitive function and memory. It has been theorized that vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy and early childhood may contribute to children developing autism. This goal of this study is to see if vitamin D supplementation can prevent the recurrence of autism in siblings of families with at least one child with Autism, by recruiting mothers of children with Autism who then become pregnant. Vitamin D levels of the mother are collected during the pregnancy, the mother will then be started on vitamin D3, and then the baby will be assessed for Autism at 18-24 months of age. Please click here for more information about the treatment protocol and recruitment criteriaPlease contact our office at or info@... if interested in participating in the study. Dr recently completed an informal study of 75 patients, and found that ounly 3 out of the 75 children and pregnant woment had 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels in the optimal range. We are recomending that all people have their blood levels checked, with a desired goal of 70-80ng/ml. Full information about vitamin D deficiency and treatment can be found at www.vitamindcouncil.com. Forward email This email was sent to badillo9@... by info@....
