When we were on the diet Ania, the dietician recommended Sealtest Cream

only! I had to buy it at Costco and Loeb because Loblaws didn't carry it.

As for the vitamins our dietician told us to use the Bugs Bunny one, sorry I

can't be more help to you. Have you tried looking at Shoppers Drug Mart? I

think I saw another brand that didn't have the nutrasweet in it. If I find

anything I'll let you know.

I wish you and all the best for the coming week. I can still

remember vividly the apprehension and yet excitement that that first day

held for us.

Often the first weeks are very hard as you adjust to the meal planning

weighing etc..but it does get easier! The other thing which is worth knowing

is that often in the first week or so your child may appear tired and

lacking in energy. This is because of the changes in metabolism that the body

is making.

keep in touch....Jeanette

We are in Toronto, too, so contact me anytime about the diet. We have

been on it for 2 1/2 years with fair success.

I use the Cal-Mag-Zinc III vitamins and minerals from Wholelife. They

are pretty good. They are in a liquid form which is good for us as my

daughter uses a g-tube. It tastes sort of chalky. I give 1/2 tablespoon

breakfast and supper.

My daughter drinks water.

I never looked at the ingredients in heavy whipping cream. Just used it

without problems.

Good luck with the diet!

Ania,

You're so right in wanting to avoid all the products with Nutrasweet

(aspartame). That can be a seizure trigger for many. It's just beyond me why

many Keto clinics recommend those vitamins...... either the Flinstone or Bugs

Bunny with Nutrasweet. For vitamins, many of us have just had to resort to

buying an adult multiple in capsule or tablet form (and crushing it), then just

cutting the dosage down. Katera was 4 when she started the diet and I gave her

about half of an adult dosage, assuming a Keto kid would need more than the bare

minimum of recommended daily allowances of most vitamins. I just mixed the vites

in a few bites of her food..... though some kids might object to the taste.

Carrageenan is extracted from seaweed and is added to cream as a thickener......

but it's a no-no for many..... and definitely adds to the carb content. I've had

to search a bit in my area for a pure cream. I'm nowhere near you so I suppose

it's no help to mention that I buy mine at Albertson's. Anyway, you're right to

avoid it as well. You may have to call a small local dairy and see if you can

order some in quantity.

I'm sure some of the other Canadians will come to your rescue! Best of luck....

Patti, mom to Katera

Starting the keto diet this Monday - not sure about

supplements

Hello everyone,

My name is Ania. My little 15 month old daughter will be

starting the ketogenic diet this coming Monday. We hope to control

her myolconic seizures that she has been having for the past 7 months

and which meds only made worse.

I made some assumptions about vitamins etc but when it came to

actually going out and buying the recommeded vitamins - Flinstones -

I noticed that they have aspertame in them and every other food that

has been recommended by our dietician seems to have aspertame

(koolaid powder, sugar-free jello). Can you please help me re.

finding keto friendly vitamins in Canada without chemicals which I

don't eat let alone would never feed to a little child?

Also, the 35% cream in my area seems to have a list of unnatural

ingredients - caraggenan etc. Is there anyone on the Toronto area on

this website who gets more natural cream than what they sell at the

regular grocery store?

I feel awful about having left these things till the last minute, but

honestly I assumed that cream's ingredients were simply " cream " .

Any other suggestions that anyone can offer re. starting on and

successfully staying on the diet, are welcome.

I am sure that I will have many more questions after our hospital

admission and diet initiation.

Thanks, Ania, mom of (15 months)
