Guest guest
Hi Al, Like you, my rosacea became noticeable after sugery, approximately 6 weeks after. I had been on some steroids and think that brought out the rosacea. I know that I had rosacea before the surgery -- had a burn once on my chin and once on my cheeks from too much sun and wind and always turned red when exercising. However, I had never even heard of rosacea so the diagnosis was a shock. Yes, you should put the lotion on in the morning and before going to bed, both after washing your face. a new member >Hi everyone, > > I was diagnosed with rosacea last wednesday. I had the red cheeks, >especially cheekbones and red nose for about three months without >knowing what it was. This is because before that I had nose surgery >for a broken nose, to remove a bump, correct septum and straighten >nose. Right after I took of the bandages from my nose I had a red nose >(bridge area) and my cheekbones were red. I asked my plastic surgeon >why my nose and face were red, he said my nose is red from the surgery, >it just has to heal, and he said that he doesn't know why my cheeks are >red and that it is nothing to worry about. About a week after I >started to breakout really bad on my cheeks, looked like I had a rash >on my face. I still thought nothing of it. Finally three months later >I still had this redness on my face that wasn't going away, so I went >to see a dermatologist, and he said that I do have rosacea and the type >that is hard to treat. Something about my blood vessels on my nose and >cheeks, he prescribed me with metrocream, and said lets see how this >works, and if this doesn't work the only other thing to do is laser >surgery. I asked him whether the nose surgery could have brought about >this rosacea, and he said he wouldn't link it to the surgery, that my >rosacea could of just happened at the same time. I told him that I >never had this redness on my cheeks before that never went away. > However, I think I might have had rosacea before the surgery, because >when I excersized hard or played basketball hard my nose bridge would >turn red as well as my face. I just thought that my nose turned red >because I broke my nose and a bump formed and that affect the blood >vessels of my skin where the bump was. Also at night when I would >shower after playing ball my face would turn red and would start to >feel really hot, I could feel that it was turning red, I just thought >that it was because I was dehydrated, I would drink cold water and >splash water on my face and just try to cool down. Somethings it >worked and somethings it didn't. I would also turn red in the face if >I was in a hot room. But the redness always went away after a while. >But after the surgery my redness never went away. So do you guys think >that the surgery could have made it worse. > My other question is does anyone use cover up or make up to cover up >their redspots on their face. I want to cover up the redness on my >nose, I pretty sure I have broken blood vessels on the bridge of my >nose and want to cover the redness up. What can I use that want >irritate or make my rosacea worse. I was also wondering when should I >apply the cream. It says put it on twice daily, in the morning and the >evening. What about at night when I'm sleeping. Can this rosacea be >controlled, like the flairup. Also I know everyone is different, but >how long should I wait before I expect to see some results. I see my >dermatologist in four months, April. > > Thank >you > Al > > >------------------------------------------------------------------------ > >eGroups.com home: /group/rosacea-support > - Simplifying group communications > > > > >
Guest guest
Welcome Sharon! If you do your BMI calculations, that should help determine if eligible. The say the weight has to be 100+ for the procedure to be done, and there are many on the list who were right at that starting " loss " . PCP's can vary. My suggestion would be, whoever you chose for your surgeon (if Dr. Shikora at NEMC), call them and ask for names of PCP's that have given referrals in the past. I don't have Neighborhood Health, but again, ask the Dr.'s office if they accept it, and what is their denial ratio if any. I've never used any " pills " in any way, that's about the only thing I haven't tried. Again, many on here have used them, so they should be able to assist better than myself in that area. Yes, you can still have children after surgery. You must wait until the weight loss tapers off, and you've stopped losing for the babies sake of course. I plan on having kids also, and per my Dr. (Dr. Sheldon Randall, Lawrence Memorial Hosp.), he said I can try anytime after approx my 18 month " window " as long as my weight has stabilized. I want to be 100% sure that my body has adjusted to the weight loss before getting pregnant to be sure the baby is getting enough from my bodies intake/absorption. I hope this helps a bit! Let me know if I can help you out, I'm here to try! Dawn Open RNY 8/9/99 Dr. Sheldon Randall, Lawrence Mem. Hosp., Medford, MA New Member Hello All, I'm a new member and wanted to say hello all... I've joined your list because myself and my girlfriend are interested in having the gastric bypass surgery performed and wanted to get info before hand. I have two question: If I'm 5'5 " and weight 235lbs am I not eligible to have the procedure done? MY ideal body weight is 135lbs, so to me, I'm eligible because I'm 100 overweight. I choose Neighborhood Health Plan as my insurance starting 01-01-01, has any had any denials from them? I had wanted to know what PCP would definitely give me a referral, so I could choose the correct PCP. I had seen a post this morning stating ANY PCP from NEMC could/would give me a referral for surgery. I don't know how true this is, but I've scheduled an appt with a Dr.Dinelli Ahern for a physical exam in March and will ask for a referral for the procedure. I also read a post that there is a well known surgeon by the name of Dr.Shirkora at NEMC that does the procedure. My girlfriend weighgt's much more than I do.........I feel I'm going to be told I don't weight enought for the procedure and at this point I want it so bad that I'm willing to pig out so that by the time my appt (3-12-01) I'll weight at least 245lbs!!! I KNOW this is the wrong thing to do, but I'm so sick and tired of failure and know I would succeed with this procedure. Anyway, if I can't get the procedure done, has anyone ever use any of the Fat Blocker meds on the market? I think it's called Meridia............. I happy for EVERY that has had the procedure and has lost weight and I hope and pray that I'll too be eligible to have it done as well. Lastly, I'm a 36 y.o. parent of a 6 y.o. son and was wondering if I have this procedure done can I still have children and if so, how long after the surgery do I have to wait before getting pregnant? At this stage in my life, I would rather have the surgery, than have another baby as there are many children needing homes. Sharon

Guest guest
Sharon, If you go to http://www.obesityhelp.com/ they have all kinds of information of various healthcare organizations, information on surgeons, profiles for people who have used the surgeons and a searchable database for questions, they also have a BMI calculator. By the way I did your BMI 5.5 @235 = 40.5 (which means you would be eligible]. Joni - Dr. Thayer 11/27/
Guest guest
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! for this message, you just made me happy! My eyes are actually welling up with tears! I feared that I would not qualify....I just choose Neighborhood Health Plan as my insurance and they said they'll cover it, as long as it is medically necc and I have a referral from my PCP. Do you mind if I ask who your PCP (or the doctor's name that gave you the referral) is to see if they accept NHP insurance. Also, who was your surgeon and where did you have your surgery done at? One more question, did you have any other major medical illness such as high blood pressure or diabetes that may have qualified you for the procedure? When did you have your surgery? I'd be happy at 135 too! Thank you so much for the information.......please let me know who your PCP is, I'm willing to go/drive any distance......... Sharon RE: New Member Sharon When I had my consultation I was 5'4 " and 236 lbs. I think I was over 240 at time of surgery due to all the " last meal pigging out I did " . Still that said I just got in with the bmi. I think it was 41. something when last checked before surgery. I am now at 138 lbs .. and trying to lose the last bit .. I'd like to get to 130 but I'd be happy with 135. My lowest weight was 132 and then I slacked off doing the things I was supposed to be doing & put on 10 lbs .. now I'm going back down in the right direction again. Remember surgery is only a tool for as long as you use it! I plan on using it right!!! I don't know about your ins. I had ppo type ins. They approved within 24 hours verbally & within 7 days in writing. I had my surgery 3 weeks to the day of my consultation & I have no regrets. Yes you can have children after the surgery. They suggest waiting 1-2 yrs for the rapid weight phase of your life to be over ... because during a pregnancy you do have to make sure you are stable weight wise, nutrition wise, health wise for the baby .. although I do know one or two people who had an OOPS before that time frame and still managed to have healthy babies they just had close supervision with their docs. Guest guest
Also, with the PPO insurance did they pay for EVERYTHING at 100%? Guest guest
Welcome Katy thanks for sharing your story so glad to have you with us. Eva (copied over for Katy - a new member here)Hi!I am 49 yrs old and a nurse. I feel like I have struggled with food addiction my whole life. I have a degree in nutrition and was a practicing Registered Dietitian for 12 yrs before entering nursing school. I think I was hoping that knowledge would influence my behavior. It helped, but not enough. The good news is I fully believe in the intuitive approach and in healthy eating and the failures of "dieting". Having said that, I feel that my eating behaviors are worse than ever. I am alone and working from home during the day-not a good situation for an eater like me. I don't have a meal schedule and seem to nibble all day. So much worse when I have access to food all the time and no one is watching. There is so much shame involved-I just want to feel better and have more control. I hope with the group support I will.------------------------------------
