Hi,

My son did have AIT a few months ago. It did not do miracles, but atleast some of his behaviours like closing his ears and extreme sensitivity to sounds decreased a bit. I was thankful for that. Moreover he enjoyed the sessions, so it was not stressful for me. every thing counts, doesnt it? I feel you could try it....

anika.

Auditory Integration Therapy is a therapy that can improve many issues with the sensory/nervous system as well as being one of the very few therapies out there to improve AUDITORY PROCESSING ISSUES. These children hear things differently than we do and this therapy can help improve this hearing of loud and soft - covering of the ears etc.The higher functioning the child, the more improvement you will see with the auditory processing issues which effect comprehension ability; however, all children make some improvement with AIT, but some just need to continue doing this on an ongoing basis, so home a home therapeutic listening program can be an alternative or adjunct if you can't afford AIT on an ongoing basis.

It's not an instant bullet cure; however, since autism is a sensory based disorder and these children suffer from all kinds of sensory issues, improving these issues for them is important...even if it is small baby steps. We don't live in their distorted world, so we can't assume what they experience is okay since they are not complaining. They don't know what normal is. AIT can improve speech and language issues, sense of smelling and taste so they improve their eating habits, their gait and balance, their sense of space and time, receptive language, calms the nervous system down, gets the neurotransmitters activated and functioning, and the list can go on....

Recovering a child from autism is not about finding a magic bullet....it's about putting the pieces of the puzzle together and rebuilding a foundation that doesn't exist. Working on all levels - biomedical, sensory, behavioral, emotional, therapeutic and so on all works together to help your child improve. Sometimes improvement may not be so apparent because it's on a foundational level, but eventually all the rebuilding will start making a difference over an arc of time. AIT is one of those therapies that impacts far greater than you can imagine.

Our son completed his AIT about a month ago. We have seen some increases in vocalizations but nothing major yet. We were told it can take up to 6 months for the major benefits so were are not expecting too much yet. We have also seen that he is less upset in loud situations e.g. a noisy wedding party that would have freaked him out before, he was very calm.

We were also told that because the kids get a bit disorientated by the unfamiliar sound patterns that we may see some regression with looking for comfort in former ( bad ) behaviors. We did see some more aggression which is still there but getting a little less. It is also important that you are very careful about other therapies at the same time because they can conflict with AIT. Our Dan Doctor suggested no IV chelation for 2 months and took him off a few of his supplements. Best approach is not to put too many demands on the child during the 2 AIT weeks- more play, less therapy.

We did AIT many years ago. At that time my son couldn't go into a store without falling to the ground in agony. Sounds were overwhelming him, he would cover his ears and tantrum. While we were in between sessions I had to take him into a large store and he sat in the cart and looked up and around and seemed to be taking everything in. It really surprised me. He definitely benefited from AIT. After a year we did it again. Today he still has issues but it is one of two things we have done that has shown to help him in some way, the other thing is allergy shots.

Is it true that once a person does AIT, they can no longer wear headphones. I thought someone once told me this years ago. Re: Auditory Integration Training

Hi,

It is recommended that once you do AIT you not use headphones to hear music again. This is true for all AIT programs although some do not tell you. IF you believe that the correct music program can help you , then the wrong music has the potential to undo the progress made. Having the sound blasting in your ear is not a good idea for anyone. IF you do AIT and get good results why would you take the chance? I have seen several clients that had done AIT else where with good results and then the school put headphones on the child and they did say to me they thought they lost some of the benefits. Then they came to me to do the program again.Ana Brushingham
