Guest guest
my doc has prescribed 3 different probiotics that add up to 79 billion CFUs. i had read elsewhere that one doc would not prescribe more than 25 billion. has anyone used as much as 79 billion? is there any risk to this much probiotic? specifically, the three probiotics are factor one, s. boullardi and infant formula, all from klaire labs. my general readinig on probiotics is that they are safe. Any input would be appreciated.
Guest guest
There is the risk of a die-off reaction as mentioned. A sudden change in gut flora may also result in some diarrhea. If that happens, cut the dose and work your way up more gradually, say start with 1/4 the dose then increase by another 1/4 every few days. As far as the number of cfu's, that is a drop in the bucket as far as European standards. VSL #3 has 450 billion cfu's per packet, pediatric dosing is 1/4 to 1/2 a packet per diarrhea episode (all day long, so if your kid has 6 bm's a day, that is approximately 100K per dose X 6 doses) and Europe starts dosing at trillions of cfu's per dose. There are a few reported cases of probiotic sepsis (bacteria in the blood) but these were horribly compromised intensive care patients, not relatively normal people. The whole purpose of probiotics is to overwhelm the harmful gut bugs with shear numbers. > Technically there is no problem to use high amounts of > microorganisms.
