Guest guest
<<< Is there anyone else here with elevated bilirubin who has been chelating without having taken any sophisticated tests such as liver detox or allergy tests? >>> Yes, that would be me. Although, I am just starting chelation. I had my amalgams out three months ago. My bilirubin has been around 2.6 for the past 10 years. I have a diagnosis of Gilbert's syndrome dating back 10 years. My liver function tests are normal. Like you, I have pain in my gall bladder area upon pressure. I did not get the Great Smokie's Comp. Detox profile. My DDI Hair Test shows positive for mercury according to Andy's counting rules. I also had a challenge test which came back in the red for mercury. I decided to go ahead and chelate and see what happens. So I did two rounds with DMSA alone, using Andy's protocol, and I noticed an increase in gall bladder and liver pain, which went away shortly after I stopped the round. I have not used ALA yet, but I will be using ALA alone very soon. I want to see if it causes me any pain. According to Andy's book, ALA increases the flow of bile, which may " exacerbate " bile duct blockages. Coincidentally, I had an ultrasound of my upper right abdomen on Monday, and that showed all clear with no bile duct blockages. I also had blood tests for direct and indirect bilirubin levels, to get confirmation on that Gilbert's diagnosis. You might want to get that same blood test before you chelate, unless you've already confirmed that you have " Gilbert's. " I imagine that trying to chelate with a bile duct blockage is not a fun thing. Knowing that you have no blockages is probably more important right now than that Great Smokie's Detox Profile. What would you do with those detox results anyway? Probably just modify your diet slightly, which you can already experiment with right now anyway. You would still need to chelate eventually even if you do have that Great Smokie Detox Profile. Changing your diet or eliminating allergens is not going to pull mercury out of your brain. So that's why I reasoned that I don't need a great smokie detox test as much as I need ALA. By the way, have you tried supplementing with TMG (tri-methylglycine) to help deal with the high bilirubin? It seems that people with Gilbert's do well on this, even better than Milk Thistle. The Jarrow brand makes a nice complementary formula of methylators, called " Homocysteine formula. " I've tried it and it's good. No side effects at all. It includes 500 mg of TMG, B6, B12 (in the more efficient mythylcobalamin state) and Folic acid. Good luck to you. I'll try to let you know how my first round of ALA only turns out. Probably some time next week. -Rob
