I am trying to put my daughter in the FL virtual school for next school year.

The school administration man for my county is saying that I need to give up the

IEP in order for her to attend the virtual school because the county can't

provide the extra reading help that she needs. He says that reading help falls

under academic instruction not related services.

I was hoping to suspend IEP services for a year and see how she does with just

the virtual school and me providing her much extra help.

He is telling me that I can't suspend services for a year.

Is anyone else encountering a problem with getting their child in the virtual

school?

Are you planning on having your daughter do the virtual school full time? Your daughter can take classes online either on a part-time or full-time basis. If it's on a full-time basis, all you have to do is withdraw her from the school she's in and register her online as a full-time (homeschooling) FLVS (Florida Virtual School) student. Why don't you ask the FLVS people directly and bypass the administrator? Go to their website at FLVS.net or call them at 1-. Hope this helps you.To: sList Sent: Tuesday, August 4, 2009 5:25:15 PMSubject: Virtual school- Florida

I looked into the virtual school for my boys, but it has MAJOR drawbacks. Little is done on the computer (about 20% of the work. You (the parent) have a major role in implementing each lesson. It would be very time consuming.

Our experience with virtual school was different. My daughter (not special needs) did two years of virtual high school, and here are our experiences:

First off, Broward Virtual is a regular Broward County school and you get a regular diploma. It is also free, when you are enrolled full time. Florida Virtual is none of the above. However, there is a connection between them, as one accesses the Broward site through the Florida site. Not sure if surrounding counties have something similar.

Second, just about everything is done on the computer. The only things that I can remember that were not computer based were science experiments and physical activity for gym. There is plenty of reading and researching for each and every class.

Lesson plans and homework assignments were plainly and rigidly stated right at the beginning of the semester. Each class has a teacher, just like in regular school, and the teacher has plenty of office hours and is available by phone and email for questions. There are also required phone sessions between teacher and each student, generally once per week. There was no parental involvement required, other than to make sure that the work was being done and to help with the assignments as with any high school student, but the lesson plans and the assignments themselves were pretty straightforward.

What grade was your daughter in, when she was enrolled in the virtual school? My boys will be in the 2nd and 3rd grade this fall. I spoke to Mrs. Dupont, the head of the virtual school for Volusia county, and she told me the majority of the work is done through text books, and parent guided lessons. It sounded very time intensive for me. I wonder why it's different in your county?

The virtual school our district is using looks horrible. Kids have to adhere to the normal school calendar at 5 hours a day for the 160 days. Scheduling is not flexible. Kids in a normal class do not do that much school work a day. My son is on hospital homebound and only gets 4 hours of work a week, but to go to virtual school he would have to go full time. Also most of the work will be done with a parent and textbooks, not on the computer.
