Guest guest
Hello everyone, Yesterday evening I had a disappointing doctor visit. I explained IE to him, and he claimed to have had several patients " fail " at it. I asked how and he said they had increased cholesterol, blood pressure, and doubled their chance of diabetes (whatever that means). He also said they had all gained weight. He was really against it. I asked him what kind of eating plan he is on, (he is a naturally thin person) and he said he eats healthy foods in the correct proportions, and that's what I need to do. I asked if he ever ate chocolate or had a soda, and he said, " of course I have, but I eat them in moderation " . So, I asked him what he recommended for weight loss. He said he recommended the South Beach Diet to people my size (that hurt). Like he was saying, " you are so huge you need a different diet than just any 'normal' fat person. " Then I asked him what he recommended for someone who is less fat than I am and he said WW. I asked what his success rate has been with those diets. He said he's seen significant weight loss and healthy changes in his patients who have followed them. I also asked how long they have kept the weight off. He said he has one patient who has kept the wieght off for 8 years. I finally had enough, and just told him that he must have hundreds of patients who want to lose weight and only one person has been successful, and that doesn't sound like an answer to me. He said fat people have to work at dieting, and that's why it fails, they become lazy. As I gathered my things I told him he was prejudiced towards fat people, and I wouldn't be coming back. He just sat there with a shocked look on his face. I feel like there is so much I could have said to him, but nothing was going to change his mind. He gave the impression that he was saving the world from fat people one person at a time. I'm just so angry at him and the world in general right now. It's like he was saying " what a greedy pig, she must be punished. " I wonder how he handles anorexia? I would love to hear some success stories right about now. Anyone want to contribute? Thanks for listening! Kath P.S. I have an appointment with a new doctor on Friday.
Guest guest
I think you 'did right' Kathleen! Although its likely you spoke to deaf (know-it-all ;-) ears of that medical 'professional', you didn't continue to value his OPINION over your own. Back in the posts of the last year or so that was a 'letter to my doctor' written my one of the members here. I don't know if the Search here is working that well to find it, but if not, you may want to see if you can do likewise - lay out YOUR needs and requirements for medical assistance. After all this is a SERVICE you pay for, not a 'god' or 'parent' you must 'report to'. May your next appointment go much better!! I too have had to change to a new professional, mainly for the same reason - the attitude of the last NP was way too 'willpower and restrictive' driven for my needs. ehugs, Katcha IEing since March 2007 > > Hello everyone, > Yesterday evening I had a disappointing doctor visit. Guest guest
Amazed how that doctor did to you. Don't feel alone on that. One of my old doctor that I have no longer see her. I don't even like her either. She said pretty much exact same with me. Only difference is that she don't want me to lose weights too fast due to my family history health. Heart attack, stress-related can kill, cancer, and many others. Though in past little over year I have lost 40 lbs but gain back 10 lbs in past few months thanks to that one guy who tend cook with cooking oil pretty much every meals everyday to the point I got so sick and knowing my body could not handle that any longer. So, I told my roommates that whenever those time he cook with cooking oil and I am gonna eat something else with NO cooking oil. Back in middle school I was lived in foster home. That one foster mother was the worst I ever had dealt with. She called me names. Fat, lazy, ugly, and other names until one day I went off on her. You see, my mother was big woman before she die. I was born that way for my whole life. Not only that foster mother but also other kids call me until one day I have had enough of them call me names. I decide join sports back then to shut them up. Big as I was then those kids got shut up because I have proved them that I can keep up with those thin kids and even better than some of them. After that they never again call me those names. Guest guest
GOOD FOR YOU FOR FINDING A NEW DOCTOR!!! I have been seriously working with IE for 6 months now and I am still gaining weight at about 1 lb per month (I haven't completely broken my scale addiction), and I haven't had my cholesterol tested yet ...BUT ... I have healed sooooo many things about my eating habits ... * I no longer do " gotcha eating " (eating in defiance of people who say/imply that I am too fat), * I am MUCH more likely to confront a person who makes me angry than retreat in resentful silence to the refrigerator, * I don't obsess over every little bite that goes in my mouth or waste my whole day constantly counting my calories and how many I have " left " for the day, then hate myself for going over * I am slowly learning to love my body for the amazing construction that it is (hey, against all odds it gave me 4 lovely healthy children!) instead of hating it for being a bit lumpy * I am gradually adding intuitive exercise back into my life as a way to feel healthy and strong, rather than just a way to burn off calories so I can EAT * I enjoy everything I eat now! In the long run - not only are these far superior outcomes than any particular weight loss (10 lbs? 20? 50???) that is 95% likely to come right back, I am happier NOW, enjoying life NOW, and am establishing habits and thought patterns that WILL lead me back to health over time. stick to your guns and good luck with your new doc!! Yes, it's frustrating for the patient and the doctor. The problem is that many doctors project their own inability to provide proper treatment for weight loss onto their patients and blaming them for not being able to lose weight and keeping it off. > Doctors generally just don't learn anything about how to help > patients with weight control in med school. What is there to learn? Only, that there is no magic bullet. I would be glad if med students would be able to get that into their heads. Regards s.
