Guest guest
, I am not sure what SCD book you referring to that you have read. BTVC stands for Breaking the Vicious Cycle written by Elaine Gottschall and it is the ONLY book about SCD. SCD stands for Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I am sorry to say that if you have been giving the algae, aloe vera, rice and soy for the last 2 years that you have not been following SCD. Please read our website, http://www.pecanbread.com and Elaine's website, http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info. For a quick overview of the SCD, the science and the foods that are allowed and not allowed (legal/illegal), please read this: http://www.geocities.com/momtobandj/SCD-autism-summary.ht ml As for your questions about being able to reintroduce foods that are not allowed on SCD (like rice and soy), it is possible that once complete gut healing has taken place that these foods MAY be able to be reintroduced. SCD is fairly new in the autism community and only a handful of ASD kids have been on the diet for even 2 years. The majority of " old timers " on SCD have been on the diet for around a year and a half. So, we have no available reference point to know how long it will take for these kids' guts to heal completely. Welcome to the list! Guest guest
BTVC is the book I read two years ago. I did not read it with detail because tristan was only eating very few foods anyway and at the time all I gave him was legal. After about two months of following it his diarhea started to slow down finally. The same time I started the SCD ( all I had to do was remove rice and potatos) I had started doing energetic detox. I was not sure what method was responsible for the healing to begin. About a year into it I just started adding a few things like soy, aloe juice, and rice I did not add until just a few months ago. Although Tristan is making progress and I really feel he is close to exploding language , it has seemed that it has been a slow road compared to some I compare to. His laguage is taking forever it seems. Is it possible that in the beginning of the SCD diet healed part way then because I did not stick strict for the whole 2 years I have hindered the process? Is the fact that rice bothers him with yeast flare ups an idication of that? So maybe I need to back up, slow down and recomitt to doing the diet strict for another year or two. To finish what I started and so the healing that has started to take place can finish complete? Im thinking sinse there has been no diarhea for almost two years now that I dont have to start the diet in the beginning stage. So thats a good thing to focus on. In other words Im part way there already. If I must get rid of his green algea, which really makes me nervous because I know its helped him so much,I need to find another natural food source vitamin. Green algea is a natural food source vitamin and thats why it is easy for the body to digest and use. All I know in the past when Ive tried to take him off he starts stimming and gets cranky. IT is some what frustrating. You think you got it figured out and then you find out other wise. Oh well guess it will be this way for the rest of his life. Back then I did not understand the importance of finishing the mission of BTVC diet for at least a solid 2 years. You know I made a mistake back in the beginning putting my child On DAN and DMSA because it set him back about a year. Now this diet thing. If I would of done it the way is should be done(3years ago) maybe he would be farther along now? Well count my losses and pick up and go again. Moms and pops like us have to have a strong back bone. Thats for darn sure. kimberly tristans mom 5yr autistic > , > > I am not sure what SCD book you referring to that you have read. > BTVC stands for Breaking the Vicious Cycle written by Elaine > Gottschall and it is the ONLY book about SCD. Kim, People tend to view us SCD-ers as very strict but this is one diet where compliance is vital for progress and I suggest you study BTVC again and the two web sites below and give it a try " by the book " . The exceptions you made would usually impede healing as they include starches that cannot be easily digested and foster bacterial overgrowth in the intestinal tract. Simply removing rice and potatoes is not adhering to the diet. Again I suggest you give SCD a proper chance and follow the instructions more accurately. We will give you all the support and information possible. People are urged not to reintroduce illegal foods until a full year after the last symptom disappears. For some this may be never and others who are healed usually reason there is not much point in taking back many of the foods that made us or our children ill in the first place. Please let us know what you plan to do. Carol F. Celiac, SCD 3 yrs.
Guest guest
Hang in there, Kim. You are certainly not alone in your feelings about wishing you had started this sooner. I think all of us wish we had found SCD long before we did. We are just happy to be here now, and very happy to have such a support network to help guide us. You are obviously doing the best you can with the information you have had. Now you know - SCD is meant to be strictly followed for at least a year AFTER all symptoms are gone. AFTER all symptoms are gone... well - that could be a very long time for some of us. And that's ok, because once you get the hang of it - it becomes a way of life. I have no real desire to get off this diet. Maybe an infraction here and there at a family wedding someday, but never fully off of it. I invite you to email some of us off-line if you need some more support and have some questions. You are welcome to email me, although I don't really know much about some of the remedies you mentioned. I do know a fair amount about SCD, though. Just, don't leave the group and don't give up on yourself yet. Take care and happy re-reading! son - 5yo ASD, SCD 15 months
