Guest guest
Hello! My 14 yr old son (Regulatory Disorder, Explosive, Sensory Integration Issues) has been on strict SCD x6 months, and we have seen many improvements, especially in terms of his overall mood (much more positive, cheerful, new awesome sense of humour, concentrating better at school, and most importantly: decrease in rages and impulsivity). However, a new problem has started up in the form of a horrible, spreading rash: -we just introduced probiotics via cashew nut yogourt 15 days ago - started out with only a tablespoon, and built up to 1 cup a day (although missed the yogourt in the past 4 days and back on today) -the day after started yogourt, son got a throat virus -two days after starting yogourt, son sprained ankle and ended up on crutches for a few days -armpits very quickly got red and angry - we assumed from crutches irritating, as this has happened to others we know who have had crutches -then redness quickly turned to rashy, itchy welts in armpits - he stopped needing crutches and we assumed welts would fade away -he hadn't complained much about the rash in the past week, but later told me he noticed in the last few days the backs of his knees and elbows getting a bit itchy, as well. -we had missed a few days of yogourt, and this afternoon, I gave him a cup of yogourt: within a couple of hours rash grew to large, patchy, raised welts under his arms, with itchy dots spreading down his sides, and some welts now behind his knees and in crooks of his elbows. -I took him into Emerg tonight as he couldn't sleep for how itchy he was, and I didn't know how much it was going to keep spreading. -The doctor said it looked to her like this is a YEAST rash. I said, " You mean " YEAST DIE-OFF " ? She said, " NO! YEAST FLARE-UP! " Question 1: Does the introduction of yogourt cause such a rash in some people, and is it actually a sign of yeast DIE-OFF? I'm sure I remember reading a reference to this in a recent post, but I couldn't find it in the Search Archives. Question 2: If it is from the die-off, what is the recommended treatment for the rash? This doctor (who seemed to know nothing about the SCD) prescribed 1% topical hydrocortisone cream and 3 days of oral antifungal (75mg Diflucan). I'm not sure whether or not to give him the Diflucan, as I wonder if he has only 3 days of Diflucan, when he goes off the prescription, would it cause the GUT yeast to flare-up again and interfere with the progress we had made in the past several months? On the other hand, I don't want him to suffer any more from this horrible rash. (Note: we had expected to see a huge flare-up of raging and behavior problems when he started the yogourt, which would signify die-off, however this didn't seem to occur in the end - mood seemed to remain relatively positive in the past 2 weeks.) Thank you so much for any help you can offer!
