I have not yet bought one as I need some $$ first but still looking at whats out there. First off, dont get anything less then a 3X optical zoom. The digital zoom does not matter. Its really just a gimic, the optical zoom is whats important. Nothing less then 3 mega pixels, but with the prices going down you may want to shoot for a 4 mega pixel. Check what type of batteries it needs, can it take pictures while charging? Is movie mode and audio important to you? And last but not least, sticking with either Cannon or Kodack is usually your best best. Both excelent brand names in the photography world! I just got a new Canon Power Shot Pro 1 and I love it but it might be more than you're looking for - it's pretty " honking " I had a Panasonic Lumix which was sweet as well before that; it had 12x optical zoom which is quite a lot and I took some dandy photos with it, I just wanted some more features with the new one. Anyway -- what I like is that it does digital video for as long as it can with the memory and battery you have. Some cameras do video but only for 30 sec or a minute at a time. Well,everyone was about 199.00 except Walmart.com...they were $174.50...I went into our local Walmart to see if they might match their online price...Guess what they said NO! She informed me that by the time I added shipping and tax it would be the same price....I started to walk away ans she had the nerve to ask me if I still wanted it because she had already pulled it out....I asked what type of software came with it ...she said how should she know...I left it there...In my travels I ended up at Staples... Same Cannon powershot 199.99 but with free memory card and a photo suite....The guy was really nice and tried to strike up a conversation with me..I told him that I was just at Walmart and they do not match their online price...He said but Staples will... And they did...so all in all I made out very well...174.50 for the camera ,a 2 year extended warranty,extra memory card, photo suite and tax for $222.00.. Guest guest Posted January 21, 2006 Report Share Posted January 21, 2006 I have a cannon a400 and im fairly happy with it. Its got 3.2 megapixles. It took a little getting used to but its been quite good. Im still learning and not all my pics turn out, but for the most part my pictures look good. If you want to see some of my pictuures i could email you some examples. Its got b & W, sepia, vivid colour and has several other digital effects. I havnt taken any night shots so i am not sure how the night and fireworks effects work. I think its under 300 canadian with the acessories. However it could be used as a webcam. My new camera cant be used as a webcam. He did tons of research on cameras, etc (he's always reading stuff in the " geek forums - lol " ). Then I got a second Sony because I'd liked it fine and had the memory cards. From my research, I think Nokia is very good and used by lots of professionals. My sister has Kodak easyshare and loves it. I wonder if you can really go wrong. Seems like everyone likes whatever camera they have. I've never known someone who's digital took bad pictures. I just love it - but wish I'd waited another year from when we bought ours: The zoom has gotten a bit better. (This one has a 4X optical zoom, with an additional 14X zoom; but higher than the optical gets a bit grainy.) It is a 3.1 megapixel camera; but I think they now have this type in a higher megapixel version. We bought the printer/charging dock and it is great. You pop the camera on the dock, push a button, and it downloads into the computer program. It also comes standard with the computer connector cable (USB connector) and charging cord with just the camera, so you don't have to buy the printer/charging dock. I think we got a deal on it with the camera, printer dock, an extra print cartridge and paper for about $320 (US) after rebate. (The printer itself would have been about $199 purchased separately.) That was about three years ago. Also, Kodak " bundles " its printer cartridge and paper for the printer dock. I like that because you aren't buying more paper than you have print capability, and you don't have to keep track of how many pics you've printed from the cartridge: The amount of paper and cartridge capability match. When I have printed from the computer to our regular printer, I'm always afraid I will run out of photo ink before the picture is done - I can never keep track of how many I've done and how many I can get out of the cartridge. So this " paper/cartridge match " is just perfect for me! We got a digital because I got tired of paying for print processing to find out that took a full roll of film of her dolls.or door knobs.or her windows.or.! Now she can take pics to her heart's content! We then can edit/delete those we don't want; print the ones we do; save them on the computer or on CD; or take the memory card to the store and process larger prints. even uses it for printing pics; it's that easy! The per print cost is more than if you go to the store (I think); but the digital aspect is great, versus waiting to develop a roll of film to find you've paid for pictures of 's nose - REALLY close up! We also thought it was great because it was working right out of the box! It is so user friendly I've hardly opened the book. It is just kind of intuitive how to use it. If I had to buy another one, I'd probably buy the Kodak again. Rick has a Kyocera 4.0 megapixel with 3X zoom for work purposes (accident or vandalism documentation); but I have a really hard time figuring out what I need to do, then I've missed the shot. The Kyocera controls for things like turning off the flash are actually within a menu system that takes too much time for me to access. (It also loses battery fast.) All the Kodak's main features are accessible from the external part of the camera. The Kodak's viewing screen is larger too. I know the warranty is good with Kodak. I had carried it in my purse and the access door to the battery got a tiny corner broken off. That allowed the battery to slip enough it wouldn't work. It was only about 4 months old. Called Kodak, got the shipping info, sent it off, and in 2 weeks had a new camera back. Only had to pay the shipping on it. We've dealt with Sony in the past on another camera, and it was a terrible experience. Rick's not had to deal with repair issues on the Kyocera yet. Just my 2 cents!
